- Diuretics - Diuretics have the ability to elevate urine excretion and they are sometimes referred to as water pills. Diuretics are usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure and similar disorders. A class of low dose diuretics known as thiazides brings down the amount of calcium discharged by the kidneys into the urine.
- Citrates - Citrate salts are frequently recommended to patients with calcium oxalate or uric acid stones. A combination of Potassium magnesium citrate which is easily available is known to be beneficial in preventing kidney stones.
- Phosphates - Phosphates is also used as a therapy in treating recurrent kidney stones. However it is used only in severe or extreme cases. Severe hypercalciuria induced due to excess assimilation of calcium from the intestinal tract is known to cause recurrent calcium stones. However there are risks associated with his form of treatment.
However neither diuretics nor citrates are recommended if you are suffering from struvite stones, urinary tract infections, internal bleeding, peptic ulcers, or kidney damage. Hence it is strongly advised to take into account a doctor's recommendation after a thorough evaluation of the type of kidney stones you might have. Do not attempt to self medicate as it could lead to serious side effects.
