Most infections are caused from one type of bacteria which is Escherichia coli, normally lives in the colon. The bacteria first travel to the urethra and sometimes sit on the opening of the utethra which then begins to multiply causing infection. In some cases the bacteria spreads and moves to the bladder and multiplies which is called cystitis results. If this infection is not treated in time it would spread to the kidneys and an infection would be caused known as pyelonephritis.  Prolonging urination causes the bladder to stretch which indeed weakens it and thus the bladder is not completely emptied. The urine that is not emptied poses a threat of infection.
