My husband is suffering from uric acid disorders – Which foods and fruits should i give him?

Uric acid is produced from purines, which are mainly found in meat and meat products. Uric acid is the final product formed from the breakdown of purines, and is essentially a waste product that must be eliminated by the system. The disorders of uric acid are a result of excess uric acid levels in the body. These levels shoot up either when production of uric acid is too high or when the kidney fails to excrete it through urine. High uric acid in the body can lead to ailments like gout, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, to name a few. Excess uric acid also makes urate crystals accumulate in the joints and tissues, causing inflammation and pain. However, most uric acid disorders are curable quite easily; along with the doctor’s prescribed medicines, a dietary change can deal with the problem effectively.

Fruit Diet To Treat Uric Acid Disorders

Make sure your husband doesn’t consume purine rich foods like meat, meat products and gravy, organ meats, pork, lentils, peas, spinach, asparagus, and yeast. Include protein rich foods like low-fat dairy products and beans instead. Also include whole cereals and food grains in his diet for complex carbohydrates. Most fruits are low in uric acid content, so you can serve him as many fruits as he wants. However, avoid fruits with calories and carbohydrate propensity, like sapota, custard apple and banana. The malic acid in apples and citric acid in lime and orange neutralize the uric acid, so make it a point to include these in your husband’s diet.

Cherries are also known to be great healers of uric acid disorders. Whether sweet or sour, give your husband about fifteen cherries in a day. After a while, you reduce the number to ten. This will keep the uric acid levels in control. It’s best to have fresh cherries, but if it’s not possible to get them, canned cherries can be used occasionally. You can also give him uncooked vegetable juices like carrot juice mixed with beet and cucumber juice every day. Coffee and dark colored fruits like black berries, blue berries, raspberries and purple grapes also help to reduce uric acid levels.

While you give your husband these fruits and vegetables, make sure he drinks lots of water to dilute the urine and flush out the excess uric acid. Also, remember that alcohol hampers the elimination of uric acid from the body. So have him quit alcohol completely, and encourage him to have more fruit juices instead. However, before starting any of these changes, consult your doctor to confirm if it’s okay to have them. Also, if your husband is overweight by any chance, weight loss will contribute to taking care of the uric acid levels as well.
