Remedies And Diet For Recurring Bouts Of Stuffy NoseA stuffy nose is not a life-threatening condition but it can certainly be extremely annoying.
You will probably have difficulty in breathing, and your head may feel heavy. Since your nostrils are blocked, you have to breathe through your mouth. This leads to dry, chapped lips, and a dry, parched throat. You may also find that it interferes with your sleep at night.
Cause of a stuffy nose: A cold or a ‘flu’ are the usual culprits which lead to a stuffy nose. Inflamed sinus is a major cause of a clogged nose.
Other than that, it could be caused by air pollution, allergies, and sometimes, even stress and physical exertion. . Some medications, for example birth control pills and diuretics, can also cause a stuffy nose.
Stuffy Nose Treatment With Stuffy Nose RemediesHome remedies: If it is part of a serious problem, you may have to take recourse to prescription drugs on the advice of a medical practitioner. In the meantime, however, you can try some effective home remedies, which will alleviate the discomfort and can even cure it altogether.
- Steam is very helpful in unclogging a stuffy nose. Boil water in a saucepan and then turn off the heat.
Drape a towel over your head and lean over it. This will prevent the steam from escaping. Take care not to bring your face too near the hot water or you might scald the skin. Within ten to fifteen minutes, you will feel the mucus loosening up and your nasal passages will open up. You may have to repeat this treatment for a few days. - Try a hot shower. The steam from the shower will have the same effect as inhaling it from a pot. This will also make the mucus less thick.
- You can also try putting your feet in a bucket of hot water. Adding a teaspoon of mustard powder will make it more effective. This is because the mustard compounds will be absorbed into your bloodstream and will help unclog your nasal passages.
- Aromatherapy is very helpful for this condition. You can either put a few drops of aroma oil during steam inhalation, or you can use them in a vaporizer or humidifier. Eucalyptus oil is especially beneficial.
- Drink hot fluids. Drink hot tea, soup or any other hot fluids. Herbal teas are quite beneficial and help to decongest the nose.
- Drink lots of water. Keep yourself well hydrated.
This helps to cure the clogged nose faster. - Sniffing an onion is another popular home remedy. This irritates the nasal passage and helps to de-clog it by thinning out the mucus.
- Eating spicy food also has a similar effect. By making the nose run, it thins the mucus and de-clogs the nose.
- Use a warm saline solution or spray to irrigate the passage of your nose. You may like to use a ‘Neti pot’ for greater convenience. This pot has a spout like a teapot. This is a slightly difficult procedure and may require some practice.
- An increased intake of Vitamin C and zinc is helpful since this strengthens the immune system and helps fight the problem.
