Osteoarthritis Diet

As the name suggests, osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease, which occurs when the cartilage in the joints get worn down, after a period of time. Osteoarthritis can affect any part of the body, but is most commonly found in the hands, knees, lower back, neck and hips. Osteoarthritis is more commonly found in older people. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, which usually worsens with time. There are some treatments that can control the symptoms and reduce the pain. Following an osteoarthritis diet is an excellent way to both treat as well as prevent this osteoarthritis.

The osteoarthritis diet should include a high quantity of foods like dairy products, green vegetables, fruits and meat. Foods that are rich in Vitamin E, like fish, eggs (yolks), corn, beef, sunflower oil, and wheat germ are very important to minimize inflammation as well as any damage caused to body tissues. For those who are vegetarian, the diet should include green leafy vegetables, avocado, barley, wheat, carrots, seaweeds, soy products, pecans, oats, millets, brown rice, and rice. Vitamin C rich foods like oranges, melons, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi fruit, and blue berries should also be an integral part of an osteoarthritis diet. Other foods that are good for patients suffering from osteoarthritis are crabs, oysters, beans, mushrooms, prunes, almonds, pork, lamb, liver and seeds – especially pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

However, while following an osteoarthritis diet, there are some foods that should be avoided, like acidic foods, nuts, plums, coffee, alcohol, sugar and sweets, margarine, salt, cranberries, spinach, processed foods, junk food, and other foods that have a high fat content.
