Diet sheets are provided during your regular check ups in the hospital. It helps in following certain healthy practices. It also aids in evaluating the individual’s diet pattern. Certain diet sheets also have certain guidelines for managing the condition. It also acts as a reference for family members, who might not have prior knowledge about the condition. Some of the basic guidelines in diabetes diet sheets are as follows:

  • Avoid excessive salt and processed foods, due to their high sodium content. Weight management is important in control of diabetes.
  • Five portions of vegetables and fruits are provided on a daily basis. Around eight to ten glasses of water is helpful in removal of toxins and other metabolites.
  • Starchy tubers are substituted for green leaves and other yellow and orange vegetables.
  • Whole grains, cereals, legumes and pulses provide ample dietary fibre on a daily basis.
  • A list of the low glycaemic index foods that are recommended.
  • A description regarding the foods in the food guide pyramid.

Diabetes diet sheet also provides alternatives for certain foods to be avoided. Sample menus are also provided. Regular eating pattern is essential to cope with a disorder and treating the same. Fizzy drinks or carbonated beverages are avoided. They increase the caloric intake. Nutrient increase is not seen.  They are replaced by fresh juices or the fruit as a whole. Low glycaemic index foods such as oranges, baked beans, porridge, apple, skimmed milk, lentils, heavy grain bread, plums, bran, yoghurt and so on. A half an hour walk, around five times a week is helpful. A healthy eating pattern with prior knowledge is helpful in curbing the situation. All these things prove beneficial, in addition to regular eating time, lifestyle modification and exercise.
