All You Need To Know About Maltesers

Maltesers are a type of confectionery item that is made up of a malt centre and coated in milk chocolate. They are roughly spherical in shape and are available in various sizes. Maltesers are most common in places like Portugal, UK, Canada, and Australia.  When they were first created Maltesers were known as “energy balls” but were later promoted as ideal for weight loss. It is important to understand the nutritional and calorific content of Maltesers in order to determine if Maltesers aid weight loss.

Maltesers have a thick chocolate coating and so it is not surprising that milk chocolate is the main ingredient.

The chocolate is made from milk solids, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifiers, and cocoa and forms 75 per cent of this confectionery product. In addition to this, Maltesers also contain barley malt extract, wheat glucose, milk solids, sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable fat, salt, wheat gluten, and pectin. A 100 grams serving of Maltesers consists of 505 kcal of energy, 24.7 grams of fat, 7.9 grams of protein, 90 mg of sodium and 62.8 grams of carbohydrates.

However, as per the new EU regulations only those foods which per 100 grams contain 40 calories can be promoted as low energy.

Low Fat Chocolate For Effective Weight Loss

Also a claim on low fat can only be made for those products per 100 grams with less than 3 grams of fat. The Advertising Standard Agency then proceeded to rule against the broadcasting of Maltesers advertisements.

There were a lot of different slogans that were used to describe it such as ‘the sweet with the less fattening center’. They were also hailed as the chocolates that actually helped to keep a person slim.

For those with a sweet tooth, Maltesers are a convenient way to satisfy the urge one gets for chocolates and sweets without putting on too many calories. But for those who are on low carb diets, Maltesers chocolates and other types of candies or sweets are not permitted.

This is because these sweets and chocolates typically tend to have no dietary fiber and very little nutritive value. Also one should watch out for those candies that are high in processed sugars as these can cause rapid rises in the blood glucose levels which can correspondingly lead to a rapid increase in insulin and result in a drop in blood sugar. It is advisable that one keeps the intake of sugary foods like Maltesers chocolates to a minimum if the intention is to stay healthy and lose weight.
