Advantages and Disadvantages of Scarsdale Diet

The Scarsdale diet is used for weight loss. The principles of the diet include low calories and low carbohydrates. The Scarsdale diet is followed for two weeks with a fixed and structured diet. This period is followed by another two week period where in less structured pattern with restrictions are seen. Sugar is substituted by artificial sweeteners. The breakfast comprises of grapefruit. This is a storehouse of enzymes and helps in breakdown of the various components. Though weight reduction is seen, the effect is attributed to the lowered calorie intake.

It is projected as an unhealthy diet and weight recurrence is seen to occur. Peas, corn, beans and lentils re completely abstained from. The lunch is filled by half a cup of cottage cheese with a fruit slice and a tablespoon of sour cream. Whole or chopped walnuts are also considered, about 6 of them. Pecans are good substitutes for walnuts. The diet comprises of low fat and high protein foods. The nutrient ratio is not well approved and is considered unique. The nutrient availability is 34.5 per cent carbohydrate, 43 per cent protein and 22.5 per cent fat. The promise of this diet is loss of twenty pounds in two weeks.
