Lean Protein Foods

Can you throw some light on best lean protein foods for diet plan?
(May 26, 2010)

Protein is one of the important nutrients that our body requires for the development of the muscles. On an average, men require 55 g of protein everyday whereas women require 45 g of protein everyday to live healthily. Intake of too much protein is not recommended as unused protein is converted into urea which in turn is converted into uric acid, turning the blood acidic. Also, to avoid putting on weight, or for that matter to help shed the excess weight, it is advisable to consume protein that is low in fat, and this can be possible through lean protein foods. There are a variety of foods that fall under the lean protein foods category.

Let us start with seafood. It is one of the best sources of protein, as it is usually low in fat. In fact, even though fishes like salmon contain higher quantities of fat, it is still advisable to eat it as this kind of fat is good for the heart. The fishes that fall under the lean protein food are sole, cod, flounder, scrod, and shellfish such as shrimp, lobster, clams, and scallop. Then, you have the white meat that comes from poultry. Even this is an important source of lean proteins. However, please remember, that the skin of the poultry is filled with the fat (saturated fat) that is not good for health. So, whenever you decide to have poultry make sure that you remove the skin completely before cooking it.

The next in line are the dairy products. Dairy products like cheese, yogurt, and milk are not only good sources of protein, but they are also wonderful sources of calcium. However, to avoid the fat, make sure that all these dairy products are made out of either skimmed milk or low fat milk. This will, in fact, help you to lose weight faster, if that is what you are trying to do. Egg contains an amazing amount of proteins. However, avoid eating more than one egg per day as excessive intake of eggs can increase your cholesterol level. Then you have the beans that contain protein that is equivalent to a medium-sized steak. Apart from the proteins, beans also contain fiber, which is very good for digestion. They also tend to make your stomach feel full for hours. The beans that you can include in your diet are chick peas, lentils, kidney beans, and black beans.
