Diet Pepsi
Is Diet Pepsi good for health?
(September 23, 2011)

Drinking excessive amounts of diet colas is definitely not good for your health. It contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, which is not good for you. The high fructose corn syrup in diet sodas is also not good for you. However, drinking a can or two of Diet colas is not likely to cause you any harm. The chemicals or artificial sweeteners currently used in diet colas do not cause any harm on minimal to moderate usage, neither is there much credible evidence to show that the ingredients contained in diet soda causes cancer.
You need to understand that diet colas are not health drinks and neither are they a sure-fire way to lose weight. Moving over to diet sodas may save you a few calories, but there are studies that indicate that drinking too much of soda, be it diet or regular, increases your chances of being obese and also related problems such as diabetes (type 2). If you are a normal healthy person with no underlying conditions or diseases, then diet colas in moderation is okay.

Does diet pepsi cause weight gain? Several studies have shown that regular consumption of diet Pepsi and weight gain go hand in hand for a number of reasons. Even though diet Pepsi is marketed mainly to people wanting to lose weight, they can in most cases result in weight gain on the contrary. The sweetness of diet drinks spikes up the insulin production in the body and blocks the body’s ability to burn fat. On the other hand the artificial sweeteners used in diet drinks act more like appetite stimulants and may cause a person to eat more food often.
It is important to understand the exact connection between diet coke and weight gain. The sweeteners in diet coke stimulate the pancreas to release insulin into the bloodstream and this insulin stops the fat burning hormone HSL to release fat into the bloodstream to be used by the body. When the body is not able to burn fat this way it starts using carbohydrates and amino acids as fuel instead. This can also make a person feel extremely hungry. Therefore the link between diet coke and weight gain in evident in people who are addicted to diet drinks as they keep putting on weight through their adult lives.

How diet coke affects fertility? Numerous studies have shown the link between consumption of diet coke and fertility and therefore it is safe to say that excess consumption of diet coke can lead to infertility in many cases. Diet coke and many other diet drinks contain artificial sweetening agents which can cause hormonal imbalances in the body and also affect the blood sugar levels. Preservative and other chemicals used in diet drinks can therefore also be a cause of infertility in women and men.
The aspartame contained in these drinks shows the link between diet soda and fertility problems. Many diet sodas also contain caffeine which can directly affect a woman’s fertility. Caffeine reduces the uterine blood flow by constricting the blood vessels and this can make it difficult for the eggs to attach to the walls of the uterus. Women who consume too much caffeine through diet drinks are more likely to face infertility issues and have delayed conception.
It is very important for both men and women to understand the relationship between diet pepsi and fertility problems so that infertility complications can be avoided. The aspartame in diet pepsi leads to an accumulation of formaldehyde which can cause infertility in both men and women.

Does diet pepsi cause cancer? It is important to understand the relationship between diet pepsi and cancer and therefore it is equally important to find out why diet pepsi could cause cancer. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is used in diet pepsi and various other diet drinks and several studies have shown that the aspartame in diet pepsi causes cancer and various other diseases. However there is still no concrete evidence which can prove this.
People who consume large quantities of diet pepsi or other drinks containing aspartame are said to be more at risk to developing various forms of cancer and other illnesses. Aspartame contains carcinogenic properties which make it a very probable cause of certain types of cancers like leukemia, breast cancer and lymphoma.
It is believed that for heavy drinkers of diet coke cancer risk also increases considerably. Aspartame contained in diet drinks is said to attack the tissues in the body and form Formaldehyde which stays in the body lifelong and is believed to cause cancer. Most of these studies however have been conducted on animals and therefore its relevance in the case of human beings is still unproven. In any case staying away from diet drinks is always a safer bet.

Diet Coke and Aspartame
Diet Pepsi, as the name indicates is a carbonated drink with low calories. Some amount of caffeine is present in them. Aspartame is the artificial sweetener used. The ingredients in diet Pepsi are caramel colour, carbonated water, natural flavours, phosphoric acid, citric acid, caffeine and potassium benzoate. Certain risks of aspartame are not established. The relation between lymphoma, brain tumour and brain lesions with aspartame is being researched. The phosphate levels are increased, thereby leaching calcium from bones.
Caffeine and phosphoric acid are related to a number of health problems, which are under research. Dental decay, decreased bone density, type 2 diabetes are some of them. Displacement of calcium is seen with phosphoric acid, thereby resulting in degeneration of bones. This causes osteoporosis, making the bones prone to fracture. Tooth enamel erosion is strong when consumed individually, rather than with other foods.
Drinking with a straw is slightly better, as then drink goes into the throat in a major manner, without touching the teeth. Brushing the teeth, immediately after drinking the same is not permitted. This results in increased erosion, due to the increased acid content. It is especially not recommended for smaller children, as calcification of bones is seen.
