A diabetic diet is a slight modification of his or her original diet. Making the diet naturally rich in nutrients with reduced amount of fat and calories is the basic principle. A healthy and balanced diet helps in curbing the blood glucose rise. The exchange system helps in providing alternatives to the same food. The quantity varies, creating the difference.

The nutrient content and their effect on blood sugar are the same. A diet filled with fruits and vegetables with whole grains and whole cereals prove beneficial. Opting for fresh foods is important. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are effective and cost effective. Whole vegetables and fruits are more preferred than its juice or cut pieces. About 45 to 65 per cent of the daily calories are provided by carbohydrates. Protein from animal and vegetarian sources should provide 15 to 20 per cent of the daily calories, whereas 20 to 35 per cent of the calories are obtained from fats. Variety in the diet breaks the monotony and ensures consistency in their eating pattern.

Complications associated with diabetes namely retinopathy, renal disease, nerve damage and cardiac problems are prevented. Eating at regular times is vital. Chronic complications, such as cancer are also averted. Unlimited amounts of unsaturated fats, such as olive and canola oil, lean protein, nuts, fish beans and low fat dairy products are helpful. Regular exercise is the most important part of the diet. Be innovative with your recipes and bring new foods in the diet. This prevents boredom and ensures healthy eating.
