Submitted by Loring A. Windblad on August 2, 2010

With the fact that almost everybody today leads a very hectic daily schedule; the time afforded to them in previous decades to cook their favorite dish is at a high premium. As a result, we have seen a rise in the demand for fast food, primarily to save time and consume food that is quite filling. However, our continued reliance on fast food as one of the primary sources of nutrition is a greatly flawed idea as most of these foods lack the essential nutrition required by the body and is considerably full of fat and carbohydrate content. The calorie content of most of these foods is astounding, especially when adorned with assortments such as cheese and red meats. Pizza’s are probably the most commonly consumed form of fast food along with hamburgers.

However, while pizzas are often not considered to be healthy, it must be analyzed in perspective. Certain types of pizza can actually be very nutritious and the right toppings can be very beneficial when it comes to boosting your immune system. For example, one of the most widely used ingredients in a pizza is tomato – which contains a substance known as lycopene - a powerful antioxidant.  This substance is known to be very beneficial when it comes to fighting off a variety of cancers and recent studies have shown that people eating pizza at least once a week are less likely to develop colon cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer and stomach cancer.

Most pizzas also include large amounts of onions which is a rich source of vitamin C, fiber, and chromium which together have a healthy effect on blood sugar and blood pressure. The red peppers that you can add onto a pizza are full of essential vitamins A, C and B6.

Pizza Bread Nutrition: The pizza bread is one of the most nutritious elements of the assortment as the antioxidant content is significantly high and can even be enhanced through a few baking techniques.  Pizza bases have significantly risen in popularity primarily because of the fact that a number of people are waking up to the many benefits of this type of ‘fast food’.

As a result, a number of people prefer to make their own pizzas at home, free to choose their own toppings and ways of cooking. Pita bread is the most commonly used pizza base and is easily available in almost any supermarket in the country.
