Split and uprooted toe nails are a common sight, however they can be quite painful. If one goes about his or her business while completely ignoring the bruised tow nail, the constant pressure will either push the nail out painfully over a period of time, or will split the nail down the middle. Toenail bruises are caused due to constant and repetitive trauma to the toes due to excessive exercise and running. The bluish black discoloration is due to the blood collecting under the nail. The reason why the toe nail hurts is because there is an injury under the nail and also because the blood collected under the nail is applying pressure to the nail from within.
To treat bruised toenails, there have been attempts made by people in the past to drain the toe nail with the help of a sterile needle, although you would be better off if you were to consult your doctor. You can go ahead and do the following: To begin with, cut the toe nail as short as you can. Once you have done this, you can relieve the pain in a few ways. Take rose-water and prepare a pack of Fuller’s earth and apply this mixture to your entire toe. This will bring down the inflammation and reduce pain. Fuller’s earth has the tendency to absorb heat, hence the reduction in pain. Another method to reduce pain is to knead some dough with flour and mustard oil and cover the entire toe with the mixture. Leave this on till it dries. Also, apply some turmeric power on top of the toe as turmeric has healing capacities. One must keep the toe elevated as placing it on the ground will produce pressure against the nail and will cause more pain. Keep your toe dipped in icy water to see results.
