Measles is a contagious disease, accompanied by dry cough, high body temperature and watering of eyes. Rashes are seen in the first four days. Running nose, exhaustion, small spots in the mouth and high fever are the other symptoms of measles. The mode of transmission is through droplets, which spread through sneezing and coughing. High temperature and delirium are also seen in some cases. Brain inflammation is a rare complication. Sore throat, a common feature of measles is relieved by gargling with warm salt water. The first three days of infection requires utmost care. Use a towel to cover the nose, so as to prevent further spread of infection. Separate the clothes, bed and utensils of the child and disinfect them on a regular basis. A well ventilated room with subdued light is of great help to the child. Vaccination is available as MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) shots. This is the only technique to avoid incidence of measles.

A healthy diet is essential as a part of treatment. All fruit diet is provided for the first three days, which is followed by a soft and bland diet. Follow it up with a balanced diet. Parsley helps in hastening of wound healing. Dehydration is a common symptom of measles. Adequate amount of water is provided by coconut water, barley water, fresh fruit juices and water. Citrus fruits such as grapes, oranges, cantaloupes and grapes prove beneficial. Vitamin A is necessary for resistance against fever. Regeneration of wounds is also seen. Raw turmeric roots are beneficial in the treatment of measles. Lemon juice is diluted with water. Orange juice is effective against toxemia. Juices of citrus fruits are highly effective, as they help in the return of good appetite. Medications are avoided. Complete rest is necessary. Warm water enema, every morning is useful in reducing the body temperature. Application of mud packs on the chest and abdomen, twice a day helps in the elimination of toxins.
