Prevent Acid Reflux with Acid Reflux Disease Diet

Can you provide me with information for natural remedy or diet for acid reflux?

Acid reflux is also called as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. Acid reflux occurs when acid or other materials present in our stomach flow back or reflux into our esophagus. This can lead to heart burn and nausea. This procedure of backflow can be painful and it can damage the esophagus.

Acid reflux can occur in any individual irrespective of his or her age and sex. However, the causes of acid reflux are obesity, hiatal hernia, vomiting or scleroderma.

In women, acid reflux is commonly observed during pregnancy.

Home Remedies for Acid Reflux

To reduce the incidence of acid reflux in our body, it is essential to make some changes in the diet. We need to make a note of which foods trigger acid reflux and which foods can provide relief from pain. There are various guidelines that can help in dietary modification for acid reflux which are as follows:
  • Have small, frequent meals.

Heavy and large meals can increase the load on the stomach and can interfere with digestion.
  • Avoid fast foods. These foods are rich in fats and hence they can aggravate the problem.
  • Have complex carbohydrate foods like whole cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates can bind with the acid in the stomach and hence less content refluxes back to the esophagus.
  • Avoid having meals just before bedtime.

We need to keep a gap of 2 hours before going to bed. Our stomach produces acid that is necessary for digestion. If we lie down immediately after the meals, then the unused acid in the stomach can reflux into the esophagus.
  • Maintain an ideal body weight as overweight individuals are susceptible to acid reflux.
  • Certain foods that can trigger acid reflux are fried and fatty foods, high fat milk, red meats, acidic fruits like lemon, oranges and grapefruit, tomatoes, onion and garlic.

Even beverages like alcohol, coffee and tea, peppermint and chocolates can cause acid reflux.
  • Prefer foods like lean meats, carrots, beans, peas, apple and bananas. Whole grain cereals, white and brown rice, white bread and grains are preferable for bringing relief from acid reflux.
Apart from dietary modifications, there are certain remedies that can be helpful for those suffering from acid reflux which are:
  • Have 2 to 3 table spoon of pure apple cider vinegar. We can dissolve this vinegar in water and drink it.
  • Have a cup of fennel or chamomile tea. Sip this tea slowly and the tea should not be too hot nor too cold.
  • Chew almonds well in the morning. This is beneficial for acid reflux.
  • Incase of the onset of acid reflux, chew a piece of candied ginger .We can also add a piece of this ginger in tea and allow it to remain for few minutes. Have this tea daily.
