What Are Lipids Anyway

All fats and fatlike substances that circulate in the blood streams are termed lipids. The 2 main types of lipids in the blood in combination with proteins are cholesterol and triglycerides.

  1. Cholesterol – It forms the structure of the body’s hormones and bile acids. There are 3 different types of cholesterol.
    • Total cholesterol – is the total amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood.
    • LDL/Bad cholesterol comes from eating excess saturated fats and cholesterol- laden foods and sometimes it is genetic.
    • HDL/Good cholesterol – It helps in collecting and eliminating bad cholesterol from the body. Heredity plays a major role in the production of this good cholesterol. Adding heart healthy monosaturated fats and omega-3-fatty acids and walking raise HDL cholesterol.
  2. Triglycerides – They are major lipids transported in the blood and regulate cells metabolism.

You can control high triglycerides in the blood by restricting the amount of saturated fats, sugars, refined carbohydrates and alcohol. When left untreated this condition may develop to diabetes and heart disease. A high-fiber diet and aerobic exercises lowers high level of triglycerides.

High levels of Triglycerides are responsible for overeating and make it difficult to curb appetites.
