Healthy Diet During Pregnancy

What are some of the foods to avoid when pregnant?
(July 26, 2010)

These nine months of pregnancy may be the most challenging months of your life, as your body is undergoing many changes. You need to be extra careful about yourself and your surroundings to avoid any problems during pregnancy. Diet being on the top of the list, it is important to learn during pregnancy which foods are safe to eat and which foods you should avoid. By this you create a healthy environment for your baby’s growth and development. A healthy pregnancy diet is the key to a healthy pregnancy.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and lots of hydrating fluids.

Here is a list of foods you should avoid for a healthy and smooth pregnancy;

  • Avoid eating raw meat such as sushi, sea food, uncooked beef, or poultry because of the risk of contamination.
  • Fish is an important part of a healthy diet. It contains omega 3 fatty acids which help build the baby’s brain, retinas, and nervous system. However, mercury present in fish can cause severe neurological damage and developmental problems in your baby. So avoid eating fish containing high levels of mercury in their fatty tissues such as shark and mackerel.
  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked eggs. All salad dressings that you buy such as mayonnaise might contain raw egg. Be careful.
  • Skip aerated drinks and caffeine based beverages such as coffee, tea, and colas. Too much caffeine may affect the growth of the baby.
  • Try and cut down your daily intake of sugar.
  • Ensure that the milk you drink is pasteurized. Unpasteurized milk may contain listeria, which may cause blood poisoning in your baby.
  • The consumption of alcoholic beverages is supposed to cause many complications in the baby such as hearing disabilities, low birth weight, and other abnormalities. Prenatal exposure to alcohol can interfere with the healthy development of the baby.
  • Vegetables are safe to eat. However, they must be thoroughly washed before consumption because they may have been exposed to parasites which are harmful.
  • It is important that you drink plenty of water, milk, and juices.
  • Avoid defrosted foods completely. Do not freeze foods that have been defrosted.
  • Avoid excess consumption of fats. Your body does need some fat, but all fruits and vegetables contain some amount of fat and this is enough for the daily requirements of your body.
For the best possible benefits, consult your health care provider about the foods you should consume which provide all the required nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to cater to your nutritional requirements during pregnancy.
