Information on Diet Coke and Mentos

The diet Coke was introduced in the year 1982, by The Coca Cola Company. It was referred to as Coke Light, Diet Coca Cola, or Coca cola Light. Originally, a blend of saccharin and aspartame were used to sweeten the coke. Later, aspartame was used alone. Certain amount of saccharin helps in increasing the shelf life and is hence added in few of the fountain coke. A lot of aroma compounds are added to diet coke. Menthol is one of them derived from mint oils or peppermint. It has the capacity to relieve irritation and acts as a local anaesthetic. It has a cooling property, on eating or topical application.

Natural flakes of menthol or crystals of menthol are made form Mentha arvensis. It also occurs in peppermint oil, from mentha x piperita. Menthol has a number of benefits, as it acts a s a topical analgesic. It cools sunburns and reduces itching. It soothes the throat and acts as a decongestant. Tracheal mites of honey bees are rectified with the help of menthol. There is some amount of pressure above the coke and between the lid, due to the carbon di oxide. Adding mentos creates the same fizz without shaking the same. The gum arabic and gelatin dissolve resulting in an increased fizz.
