Irrespective of this fact the nutritional value of an egg cannot be overlooked. Eggs are rich in carotenoids especially zeaxanthin and lutein which can actually prevent macular degeneration in the eyes. Regular consumption of eggs also lowers the risk of eye problems like cataracts. A single egg contains all the essential amino acids and six grams of high quality protein which are very beneficial to the human body.


Regular consumption of eggs also lowers the risk of heart disease, strokes and blood clots. This is why many experts advocate eating an egg a day to stay healthy. The nutrient choline obtained from eggs helps in regulating the cardiovascular system as well as the nervous system. Furthermore eggs may also be beneficial in preventing breast cancer and many vitamin D deficiencies.

Eggs are a good source of nutrition and are considered to be very important by athletes and sports persons. Eggs contain plenty of protein and also some fat, both of which are needed by the body. The downside of this is that eggs do contain a fair amount of cholesterol. This makes it unhealthy to consume eggs in large quantities. It is therefore recommended to eat just one egg per day if one is on a healthy diet. The consumption of raw eggs for weight gain is something that can potentially make one sick. It is better to consume a boiled egg for increasing weight as this is one of the healthiest methods of cooking an egg. If one looks at an egg, there are two distinct parts. The outer white of the egg is the part that contains plenty of protein and is quite healthy to consume. The inner yellow part of the egg is where the fat and cholesterol come from. There are some diets that recommend large quantities of eggs to be consumed. These are not healthy diets. Instead, one should consume a single egg along with other nutritious food in order to gain weight in a healthy, balanced and sustainable manner.

While Bird eggs are typically more popularly eaten across the world, including those of Chicken, ducks and turkey, Caviar or fish eggs are more a part of some exotic food offerings. Egg protein is considered among the best forms of protein as compared proteins in other forms of food including meat. Nutritionists, most often benchmark the protein in eggs for comparing the proteins that are derived from other forms of food including meat and pulses. Eggs are also a good source of Vitamins A, D & E, and essential minerals like Iodine and Phosphorous.

Egg consumption has several benefits. It aids growth and development, especially for children. It also helps in strengthening the bones and teeth. Moderate egg consumption is also good for the heart. It is also known to protect against cancer. However one should not eat eggs in excess as there is almost 200 mg of cholesterol present in one egg. Typically as one reaches middle-age, the consumption of eggs should be restricted to up to 2 a day. The edible portion of the eggs is the albumen, popularly known as egg-white and the vitlellus, popularly known as egg yolk. Eggs are eaten in various forms. From simple boiled, fried or scrambled to the more exciting Spanish omelets and egg benedicts. It is always advisable though to eat eggs as boiled or cooked and not eat them in their raw form. This reduces the incidence of food poisoning which may be caused by a form of bacteria called salmonella, present in eggs. While the non-vegetarians have no qualms in accepting eggs as a regular part of their diets, there have been contrasting views on whether eggs can be considered vegetarian or not. Most categories of vegetarians do not eat eggs and the `vegans neither eat eggs nor dairy products as they believe in the philosophy of not just eating but also not using animal products in any form. Several vegetarians, also known as ovo-vegetarians, though eat bird eggs in its various forms. There is no hard and fast opinion among the vegetarian populace in general whether eggs can be considered vegetarian or not. This has always been a grey area among the different types of vegetarians. It’s quite like the proverbial ‘chicken and the egg’ theory where in people still cannot decide which came first.
