Side Effects of Diet Pills

Diet pills often have high claims of losing weight in an easy and quicker manner but rarely that is possible alone. There are different types of diet pills available in the market; some are just a mouse click away without any prescription. There are three main categories of these weight loss supplements –

  • Calorie burners which contain stimulants which tend to increase the metabolic rate temporarily and thus help to burn calories. The common side effects of these are increased heart rate, high blood pressure and anxiety. Common stimulants used in this group include coffee, green tea, ma huang or ephedra and guarana.

  • Appetite suppressants contains the above mentioned stimulants and also other ingredients like citrimax and conjugated linoleic acid which together help to stimulate the sympathetic system and suppress the appetite. Common side effects noted with these are nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal distress like bloating and heart burn. It can also cause a serious side effect like heart valve damage and Phen-Phen.
  • Absorption blockers have substances which block the absorption of carbohydrates and fats in the intestines. Studies have shown iron and copper loss from the body of a person using these pills. Also if fat is not absorbed then the fat soluble vitamins required for various functions in the body are also not being absorbed.
