Diabetes Daily Diet

Diabetes is a common disorder that affects many individuals in the world. Though, there is no standard diet format, certain guidelines proves effective in curbing the blood sugar levels. Diabetes education is essential and is the primary step in treatment. Knowledge of the disorder and the management pattern is to be advised. It is the fifth common reason for death. Managing the disorder helps in overcoming the associated complications. Counting the calories of foods eaten is helpful in limiting the caloric intake. This in turn helps in decreasing the bodyweight, as obesity is commonly associated with diabetes. Do not panic.

There is nothing special about a diabetic diet. The diet of a diabetic is a slight modification of a normal diet. Complex carbohydrates are preferred than simple carbohydrates. Wholesome and fresh foods are useful. Pulses, legumes, cereals and whole grains are the foods that provide fibre in the body. These prove beneficial, rather than the artificial dietary fibre supplements that are available. Sweets, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, honey, glucose and candies are the foods to be avoided. Desserts are replaced by low glycaemic index fruit salads.

Starchy vegetables, like yam, potatoes, sweet potatoes and colocasia are not included. Regular eating habits are recommended. Improper timing and fasting are avoided. Skipping meals is not allowed. Green leafy vegetables provide the necessary antioxidants. Other yellow and orange vegetables provide the most essential vitamins, phyto nutrients and minerals. Proteins in the diet are obtained from chicken, fish, egg, pulses, legumes and poultry. Fat contributes to around 20 per cent of the total calories. Saturated fats or solid fats are not preferred. Oils with poly or mono unsaturated fats are preferred. Use of non-stick cookware helps in minimising the oil usage. Oil sprays prove beneficial. Alcohol and cigarette smoking are also not preferred.
