Submitted by Loring A. Windblad on December 14, 2009

A complex process that involves a general inflammation of the nerves leading to various complications in normal nerve function is known as neuritis. Simply put, it is an inflammation of a nerve accompanied by pain and sometimes loss of function. Neuritis specifically affects the peripheral nerves that affect the functionality of the sensory and motor nerves causing a breakdown. There are different types of nephritis and some of them include:

Brachial neuritis
Optical neuritis
Intercostal neuritis
Ulnar neuritis
Lumbosacral neuritis
Vestibular neuritis
Occipital neuritis

In order to treat neuritis it is important to look into the causes causing the medical condition. There are a number of causes that can lead to neuritis; it can range from a simple infection to malignant tumors.

Some of these causes are:

Shingles
Leprosy
Herpes Simplex
Radiation
Chemical or physical injuries
Diabetes
Deficiency of vitamins
Hyperthyroidism
Metabolic disorders
Alcoholism
Autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis
Bacterial and viral infections
Localized trauma

Acute neuritis that is an uncommon type of neuritis is characterized by severe pain in the shoulders and upper arms. It can also lead to progressive muscle weakness. Medical experts are the opinion that neuritis can be treated with the help of painkillers in order to obtain temporary relief from the condition.

However complete healing is doubtful and sometimes the patient may take a number of years before he or she is completely healed of the disease. It is extremely critical that the patient receives optimum nutrition in the form of whole grains, especially whole wheat food products, brown or wild rice, raw fruit and vegetables including sprouted seeds, milk and dairy products and home-made cottage cheese.

Food groups abundant in vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, and pantothenic acid are believed to bring about beneficial results in a patient with neuritis. It has been reported that many of the debilitating symptoms such as extreme pain, muscle weakness and numbness are often relieved in a matter of hours after an intravenous administration of the vitamin B group.

Other helpful home remedies include consuming soya bean milk blended with a teaspoon of honey.

Soy milk with honey must be consumed every night prior to bedtime. It is believed that the rich concentration of lecithin and other important vitamins and minerals in soymilk is helpful in toning the nervous system. A home brew prepared from barley is also considered to be an effective remedy for neuritis.

Drinking barley water along with other juices including raw carrot and spinach has been proven to be valuable in relieving the symptoms of neuritis due to the abundance of essential trace minerals found in these vegetables.
