Yogurt for an Upset Tummy?

Submitted by Stella Morgan on April 12, 2012

It can be quite perplexing to decide what to eat and what not to eat when you’re suffering from an upset stomach. If you’re thinking –is yogurt good for an upset stomach? Then rest assured, because it is! Easily accessible and extremely cheap, yogurt for upset stomach is preferred by most people. Yogurt contains numerous living bio-organisms (1 cup of yogurt has billions of bacilli), which once consumed enter into the gastrointestinal tract.

The ‘good’ bacteria present in yogurt along with the other micoflora present in the gastrointestinal tract have positive effects on the body. Given below are some of the things that a single cup of yogurt can do for you.

  • Help in the breakdown of food and improve digestion
  • Maintain a healthy quantity of bile salts in the digestive system
  • Reduce the growth of pathogens
  • Bring down cholesterol
  • Suppress the growth of tumors
  • Prevent the presence of microorganisms that are harmful inside the GI tracts wall
  • Stimulate interferon production – a protein group that increases the activity and strength of killer cells that form the main part of the immune system
  • Produce an antibiotic effect that is natural and eliminates harmful putrefactive bacteria in the bowels. The digestive system gets clogged by these bacteria and causes the formation of toxic waste.

Because of all the beneficial effects it produces, yogurt for an upset stomach is considered to be an effective remedy.

Yogurt For Upset Stomach In Baby

Most babies are quite fond of yogurt, and giving it to them as a medicine can be done without too much resistance. Yogurt provides certain kinds of bacteria that your baby may not have. This bacteria present in yogurt will help treat the stomach upset.

If the baby suffers from frequent stomach upset then include yogurt in his daily baby feed. It is recommended that you consult a pediatrician before trying any home remedies on babies.

Yogurt For Stomach Problems

Yogurt is used quite commonly to treat stomach pain related to food poisoning, stomach flu, and a running stomach. Consuming yogurt can help restore the bacteria that are beneficial in the stomach and reduce the severity and duration of diarrhea.

If you have an allergy to milk or are lactose intolerant, you can purchase probiotics from a medical store, which are dairy and lactose free. There are many brands of yogurt that have the presence of probiotics which are effective in restoring and maintaining the level of microbes in the gastrointestinal tract. However, since yogurt needs to be refrigerated it is not very convenient. It is better to use natural yogurt rather than the flavored ones because the flavored ones are considered to be less healthy. Natural yogurt is also an excellent source of protein and calcium. You can also read information on foods for sensitive stomach.
