Milk Allergy Diet

Milk allergy diet helps infants with intolerance to milk.



Lactase enzyme is essential for the breakdown of lactose or milk sugar. Deficiency of this enzyme creates intolerance to milk. The child is unable to digest the milk. Care is essential in planning a diet for infants with this disorder, as a number of formula feeds have lactose, as one of its essential component.
 
Milk allergy infants need alternate food sources that provide the necessary nutrients.



It is the response of the body to milk and milk related products. It is very commonly seen in infants. Milk is an essential part of many foods, such as butter, cream, yogurt and ice cream. Milk is present in invisible forms in certain foods.



Read food labels to completely eliminate foods that contain milk.

Milk allergy toddlers also require a lot of care and are given soy substitute milk formulas. Certain individuals suffer from milk allergy even in their adulthood. Products with the label 'non dairy' indicate the absence of cream, milk and butter, though the incidence of milk containing substances is high. The letter "D" on any food product indicates the presence of milk or milk protein. Such foods are not considered. Certain processed foods, such as sausages, hot dogs, luncheon meats and so on contain milk in some form or the other. Individuals with milk allergy are at high risk for allergy to beef and beef containing foods. Include ham and luncheon meats without milk.
Individuals on milk allergy diet are allowed to eat certain foods, such as milk free breads, rice wafers, cereals devoid of milk and so on. Include beverages such as fruit drinks, black coffee, black tea and carbonated drinks in their diet. Allow desserts such as cake, gelatin, meringue, fruit whip, pie crust and popsicles. Egg recipes without milk are used.



Fats and oils, such as margarine (devoid of milk), vegetable oil, shortening, milk free gravy and lard are used. Peanut butter without any milk solids in them can be used.

Read food labels. Avoid foods that contain any of the following substances, such as cream, lactose, artificial butter flavour, casein, butter, clarified butter, nougat, lactoglobulin, milk derivative, rennet casein, custard, casein hydrolysate, cheese, curd, cottage cheese, magnesium caseinate, sodium caseinate, potassium caseinate, lactalbumin phosphate, yoghurt, sour cream solids, whey and sour cream solids. Certain other milk sources are natural flavouring, chocolate, brown sugar flavouring, margarine, high protein flavor and caramel flavouring.
