Diverticulitis Symptoms and Diet

Diverticulitis diets are in most cases the most efficient and practical approach to treating the condition. Diverticulitis is a gastro-intestinal tract disorder that mainly affects the colon. In this disease pockets or 'diverticula' develop within the colon wall and generally in areas of the bowel that are weak, particularly in areas where the walls of the bowel are penetrated by a large number of bloods vessels and in areas like the sigmoid colon that are generally a lot narrower than most others. While most treatments address the symptoms of diverticulitis, the disorder can be completely treated through dietary changes if it is a mild case. Severe cases of the disease may however require surgery for the complete removal of the diseased portion of the colon.
If the patient is experiencing a mild attack of disorder, a low-fiber diet or a clear liquid diet would be recommended.

This diet for diverticulitis helps the infected area to heal and alleviates any diverticulitis symptoms. A clear liquid diet would include plain water, fruit juices without pulp, broth (bouillon or consumme), gelatin, popsicles without fruit pulp or bits of fruit, and tea or coffee without cream. Foods that are allowed in the case of a low-fiber diet typically include enriched white bread, noodles or macaroni, white rice or plain pasta, low-fiber cereals, most raw, cooked or canned fruits without seeds, skins or membranes, fruit juice with minimal or no pulp, well-cooked or canned vegetables that are without seeds or skins, tender meat, fish and poultry, eggs, smooth peanut butter, milk, yogurt or cheese again without any seeds or nuts, desserts without nuts or seeds.

Soon after diverticulitis symptoms improve, which is generally within a few days, your dietary intake of fiber can be gradually increased.

You can begin by adding around five to fifteen grams of fiber on a daily basis to enable your digestive system to adjust. This is quite important as eating fiber will be important to preventing further attacks. High-fiber foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, help to soften waste so that it can pass through your colon quickly and easily.

This causes a significant reduction of pressure within the digestive tract. Try to stabilize it at twenty five to thirty grams on a daily basis. In addition to this drink a lot of fluids.

Along with any diet for diverticulitis it would also help to do some light exercises regularly.
