Green BeansGreen beans are also commonly known as the string beans. These are a great source of a numbers of minerals that are necessary to keep you healthy and going. Green beans are a good potassium source. Green beans are also a good source of magnesium and folate.
Magnesium, potassium and folate work together to provide cardiovascular protection. Magnesium and potassium provide help lower blood pressure levels in people suffering from high blood pressure.
Folate in green beans helps convert a harmful molecule, known to damage walls of blood vessels and dangerous to heart, into other benign molecules, which have no effect on the body. Thus green beans offer cardiovascular protection.
Green beans have Vitamin C and beta-carotene. Both these protect colon health.
Free radicals in body often prove to be damaging to colon, this might also cause colon cancer, and therefore green beans offer protection against colon cancer. Fiber in green beans also has the ability to provide protection from colon cancer. The fiber binds toxins in body and removes them from the body thus helping in removal of toxins from the body.
Another mineral found in abundance in green beans is iron.
Iron found in green beans is especially beneficial for women in menstrual age. Women tend to face more iron deficiency because of menstruation, green beans provide ample of iron, a little lesser than red meat, but without any calories at all. The iron is green beans are totally fat free.
Another important mineral in green beans is the Vitamin K, this vitamin is known to help maintain bone health. Vitamin K1 activates protein called osteocalcin, this is non-collagen protein that is stored inside the bone. If osteocalcin levels are low because of low Vitamin K1, bone mineralization might not take place.
One cup of green beans completes 25% of requirement of Vitamin K, consuming beans can complete your requirement of iron up to an extent. You can consume beans in different ways. Including beans in food is easy, green beans can be used in salads; you can use it by steaming. You can also include green beans in Chinese preparations, green beans can be used in noodles and used singularly after sautéing it lightly on oil.
Green beans should be used fresh; you can store these by refrigerating unwashed beans. For use, beans should be washed and both its ends should be removed either by breaking them or cutting them off. Green beans can be used by cutting these up into small or large pieces. Green beans therefore, are easy to make and eat.
