Cloves

Cloves are the flower buds of a tree, which grows up to 12 meters.



They are unopened buds, commonly used as a spice. Tooth decay and toothache are the terms reminded of, while discussing about clove. Halitosis or bad breath is also counteracted by cloves. Steam distillation releases essential oils from the buds. This oil contains eugenol acetate, carophyllene and free eugenol.



Eugenol is present in more quantities in the stem oil, than in the oil of cloves. Cloves are aromatic contributing to a peak of flavor in the dishes added.

Bronchial problems and respiratory issues are cleared by cloves acting as expectorant. A decoction is stimulating and aids in removing flatulence. Indigestion, dyspepsia, vomiting and nausea are relieved by clove.



They are germicidal and antiseptic in nature. Spasmodic disorders are counteracted. Body temperature is monitored and blood circulation is enhanced.  Application on the skin results in heat and redness.  Digestion is enhanced by the release of enzymes. Vomiting is kept at bay, by grinding roasted cloves with honey. Clove possesses anesthetic action, which helps in combating vomiting and thereby numbs the gullet.

Gastric irritability and dyspepsia is relieved by clove intake. Around 4 grams of clove boiled in three liters of water is effective in the treatment of cholera. The water has to be boiled to half its content. Around 6 cloves in 30 ml of water, taken with honey is effective as an expectorant. It is a potent healer of asthma and breathlessness. Clove oil or clove helps in providing relief from toothache. Around a teaspoon of sesame oil, with a sauted clove is efficient as treatment for earache. Clove oil, used as a poultice is effective in getting rid of muscular cramps.

Clove and salt crystal paste proves beneficial against frequent headaches. Its anti inflammatory nature treats stye around the eye.



A clove rubbed in water and placed over the place cures stye. Pumpkin pie and ginger bread are incomplete, without the addition of ginger.  This wonderful, sweet and aromatic herb is available throughout the year. Eugenol helps in prevention of pathogenic compounds from pollutants, such as, carbon tetrachloride. Clove oil is also a part of commercially available mouth washes and sore throat sprays.  Inflammation of joints and digestive tract cancers are avoided by inclusion of clove. Root canal therapy makes use of eugenol packs to prevent further degradation. Phytonutrients are present in clove, in addition to other nutrients.
