How Much Protein per Day?


It is a well known fact that the human body requires a combination of different nutrients in order to function properly. One of the nutrients, protein, is the main component, required by the body, for the development of tissues. Therefore, all people should make sure that they consume an adequate amount of protein each day, to support the repair of body tissues. Protein is all the more important for those who are building their bodies and increasing their muscle mass. When women consult health experts for the amount of protein that they should consume in a day, they are generally given a number, like 60 to 90 grams each day. Others are told that they should have around 4.5 grams of protein for each 10 pounds of body weight.  However, this does not apply to all women, as factors like age, body type, current weight and levels of physical activity all play an important role in the amount of protein that should be consumed each day for women.

Several men are known to consult fitness experts on how much protein they need per day to build muscle. While different people may have varying opinions, one of the best methods of calculating how much protein is enough for men who have been asked to follow a high-protein diet for body building, one of the best formula is lean muscle mass, multiplied by the number 2.75

How much protein per day for children?


Protein is very important for children, who are growing everyday. Experts recommend that a healthy child, between the age of 1 and 3 years requires 0.55 grams of protein each day, per pound of body weight. Hence, an average toddler, who weighs around 29 pounds, should get 16 grams of protein per day. For children who are between the ages of 4 and 6, 0.50 grams of protein should be consumed, per pound of body weight.

Several online resources have a “how much protein per day calculator” for people, which takes gender, age and body weight into account. However, it is best to seek the guidance of a dietician or a fitness expert on how much protein per day is needed.
