10 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism - Metabolism Boosting Tips

What is Metabolism? Metabolism is the process, whereby energy is made and used by the body. Metabolism controls the calorie burning speed of the body. Metabolism depends on the type of food you eat and the type of activity you do.

If you have a higher metabolism you burn up more calories, and hence you have a low percentage of body fat. If you have a slower metabolism, you burn up fewer calories and hence tend to store more fat.

Younger people usually have a higher metabolic rate, because of higher activity levels. This rate slows down as you age. Boosting your metabolic rate helps you to shed fat quicker and more easily.

Causes for Low Metabolism: While ageing leads to a slowing down of the metabolic rate, other factors too could cause you to have a low metabolism, even at a younger age. If you have an under-active thyroid, snack heavily on foods with a high sugar content (candies, cookies, cakes and sodas), ignore daily exercise, or are on a very restrictive diet your metabolism may slow down.

Boost Your Metabolism - Easy And Effective Way:

  • Have regular meals. Starving yourself to lose fat may actually backfire on you.

When the cells of your body do not get sufficient nutrition at regular intervals, they tend to slow down the metabolic rate in order to conserve energy.
  • Eating smaller but more frequent meals helps keeps blood sugar levels stable, thus providing a steady source of energy throughout the day. This will actually fire up your metabolic rate.
  • Do not skip breakfast.

Eating a healthy breakfast is a wonderful way to rev up your metabolism. Research and experience has shown that people who start the day with a healthy breakfast are leaner than those who don’t drink plenty of water. Water flushes out toxins, which is the by-product when fat is burned. This keeps you healthy and also increases your metabolism.
  • Reduce your intake of sugar. Sugars give an increased energy and calorie boost to the body. Since this is more than what the body can use, it gets stored in the fat cells and slows down metabolism.
  • Drink green tea. Green tea contains certain plant chemicals such as catechin polyphenols, which boost metabolism.
  • Eat hot foods like peppers, and jalapenos. Add them to your soups, scrambled eggs and stews. Spicy food has certain chemicals which speed up metabolism.
  • Exercise: Make daily exercise a part of your daily life. Exercise will increase your metabolism, helping you to burn calories and body fat. Go jogging, walking, swimming, cycling or any other exercise for 30 to 60 minutes each day.
  • Build up lean body mass: Muscle is a good indicator of how well your body is metabolizing your food and burning calories.
  • Get rid of stress: Stress releases a chemical called cortisol in our body, and this slows down metabolism. So avoid stress.
  • Sleep: Research shows that people, who do not get sufficient sleep, tend to put on weight. At least seven to eight hours of sleep are essential since it is only during this period that the body regenerates its lean muscle
