Kissing disease |
What is kissing disease? Kissing disease, as the name suggests is a disease that can easily be passed on from one person to another, by kissing. The kissing disease has other names too, such as mononucleosis, mono and infectious mononucleosis. Kissing disease can be quite contagious and is easily passed on through the exchange of saliva. Because of this, the kissing disease can also be passed on if you share food, glasses or utensils with a person who has infected by the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). At times the disease can be transmitted to another person even without coming into contact with the saliva. For example, if a person who has mononucleosis sneezes or coughs, you could be exposed to the virus if you are close to the person. Mononucleosis can infect both adults as well as children, but adults are more likely to be infected with it, than children are. Once the virus enters a person’s system, the person usually develops immunity towards the disease thereafter.
Symptoms Of Kissing Disease There are quite a few symptoms of mono kissing disease that are evident in the adults and adolescents who get infected. When children suffer from the kissing disease, they do not really show most of it symptoms and therefore the condition can easily go undetected in them. The more common kissing disease symptoms are a severe sore throat or strep throat, a rash on the skin, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, a fever, a swelling in the tonsils, headaches, night sweats, weakness, the enlargement or the swelling of the spleen and a loss in appetite. The symptoms that are less severe, like the headaches, fever, weakness normally last for a shorter period of time, unlike some of the other symptoms like the swollen spleen or the swollen lymph nodes, which usually last a bit longer.
Treatment for Kissing Disease In most cases, the kissing disease is not serious and does not cause much harm to the patient. In fact, there is no fixed treatment plan for the disease either. The use of some medication (ibuprofen and acetaminophen) is recommended, for treating the fever and the headaches. However, using antibiotics to treat any throat problems is strongly discouraged, as they could worsen the condition and could in fact lead to a skin rash, known as the infectious mononucleosis skin rash. Most medical experts often recommend home remedies to treat the condition. Gargling a couple of times a day, for a few days can help in relieving the discomfort caused by a sore throat. You could prepare a simple gargle solution by taking some warm water and adding a bit of salt to it. In addition to gargling, it is important to get a lot of bed rest, drink plenty of fluids through the day and follow a healthy diet.
Complications that may arise with kissing disease:
However, there are some more symptoms that could be observed, when a person is suffering from the kissing disease. These symptoms are rare, but could signify a serious health problem. These less-commonly seen kissing disease symptoms are jaundice (which can be detected when the skin and the eyes turn yellow), swift and severe pain in the abdomen, severe weakness, difficulty in breathing, persistent high fever (which is above 101.5 degrees F) as well as trouble with swallowing. A complication that may develop is the rupture of the spleen, due to strenuous physical activity. In case you notice any of these symptoms, please visit your medical health care provider, without any further delay.
Therefore, one of the most important kissing tips that should be kept in mind is to make sure that the other person is not a carrier of the kissing disease.
