Malassezia yeast fat eating fungus causes dandruff:

I have dandruff and hair loss how can I prevent it?

Dandruff and hair loss can be caused due to a variety of reasons.

To cure this scalp and hair problem it is very important to identify the root cause first. Hair loss can be due to many reasons like hormonal changes in the body, poor nutrition, certain diseases and medical treatments, medications, hair treatments, unhygienic scalp conditions or scalp infections (this includes dandruff too).

Dandruff a chronic scalp disorder can be caused mainly due to malassezia that is yeast like fat-eating fungus.

Dandruff can also be caused due to stress, oily scalp, use of many styling products which have chemicals, poor diet, and shampooing too often or less often.
Dandruff and hair loss; both these conditions are not too serious or contagious but yes they can be often embarrassing and depressing at times. So it is very important to treat both the conditions on a serious note before it takes any serious form like baldness or scalp infections.

Try the following solutions for dandruff and hair loss -

  1. Eat a nutritionally healthy well-balanced diet high in proteins, zinc, B-complex vitamins, and essential fatty acids to prevent hair fall and dandruff. Food sources of these nutrients include fish, dairy products, oysters, shell fish, flaxseeds, whole cereals, whole grains, whole pulses and sprouts.
  2. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin and scalp well hydrated.
  3. Spend some time in the sun as it will help to prevent dandruff. However don't expose your skin for long hours in the sun to prevent the risk of skin cancers and skin tanning or burning. Also remember to apply a sunscreen lotion on the exposed areas of the skin.
  4. Try to avoid any stress as far as possible be it physical or psychological to prevent further hair fall and dandruff.
  5. Keep your scalp clean, avoid over shampooing but make sure to clean the scalp regularly to prevent dandruff. A mild form of dandruff can be successfully treated by maintaining proper scalp hygiene.

  6. Avoid the use of styling products like styling gels, mousses, hair sprays or hair waxes as these can build on the scalp and hair and make them oilier and more prone to dandruff and hair loss.
  7. Let your hair dry naturally, avoid blow drying or ironing your hair often to prevent hair loss. Also brush your hair gently and avoid tight hair styles and compulsive bending, twisting or pulling your hair.

If you have any other balding pattern sign or severe hair loss due to some disease, then consult a specialist for advice and medications.
