Cholesterol Foods And Diet To Lower High CholesterolCholesterol is a waxy steroid found in the membranes of cells and is transported to the blood plasma of all living beings.
Cholesterol is an important component of cell membranes and as such, some amount of cholesterol is essential in the body.
Cholesterol is insoluble in blood and as such, it is transported by attaching to the lipoproteins in the blood. These lipoproteins could be high density lipoproteins (HDL) or low density lipoproteins (LDL).
Managing High Cholesterol Naturally With Cholesterol Lowering DietWhen the level of cholesterol increases in the body, it can have adverse effects.
The major problem is caused by LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol has a tendency to stick to the walls of the arteries.
This condition is referred to as a thickening of the arteries, medically known as arteriosclerosis.
Arteriosclerosis may lead to an increase in blood pressure on account of a reduction in the volume of the arteries. This chronic condition may lead to blood clots if there are blockages in the arteries, which may ultimately lead to various cardiac ailments.
As high cholesterol levels pose a serious threat to life, you must control the cholesterol level in your body. You can regulate the cholesterol content of your body through diet. The specifics of a cholesterol lowering diet are as follows:
- The foods that are very rich in cholesterol are red meat and dairy products like cheese, eggs, and whole milk. These foods raise the cholesterol level of your body, making you susceptible to heart diseases.
As such, you should restrict the intake of these foods in your diet. - You must also cut down on the consumption of refined sugar as it is also instrumental in raising the cholesterol level in your body.
- You must consume a lot of green vegetables and fruits as these foods are not only negligible in their cholesterol content, but some of these foods act as negative calorie foods that reduce the fat and cholesterol content of the body. Some of the must-have vegetables for a low cholesterol diet are spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, chili peppers, turnip, garlic, onions, broccoli, beet, celery, chicory, garden cress, turnip, and green beans.
- The fruits that must be included in a low cholesterol diet are mangoes, peaches, pineapples, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, apples, tangerines, papayas, cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew and citrus fruits like grapefruits, lemons and oranges.
- Some salad foods like cabbage, cucumber, onion, radish, tomatoes, carrot, and lettuce are also recommended to be consumed as part of a low cholesterol diet on account of their high fiber content.
- You must drink a lot of water as water dissolves cholesterol and fats, thereby relieving you of the grave consequences of excessive fats.
- Do not smoke or consume too much alcohol.
