Diabetic Snacks


Diabetes is a disease caused by high glucose levels in the blood. Controlling diabetes involves keeping a regular check on the glucose levels in the blood as well as losing weight. It is very important for diabetic people to follow a strict balanced diet which is low in fats and carbohydrates. Healthy diabetic snacks should be a part of their daily diet and these would need to be consumed between lunch and dinner to maintain blood sugar at the required levels. Selecting good diabetic snacks will largely depend on the type of medication the patient is taking and also the diet routine he/she is following.

If the medication is oral, the patient should eat relatively smaller meals and diabetic snacks foods which are rich in protein. This way over eating can be avoided and their hunger is also satisfied. If medication is in the form of insulin injections, most of the carbohydrates should be eaten during meal time when the insulin level is high and the snacks should be low in carbohydrates.

Diabetic snacks however should never be as big as a meal and the calorie intake should be controlled. Healthy diabetic snacks recipes should ideally provide only 150 calories or lower. Avoid over eating a low fat snacks simply because you feel it is low in calories. At a time you should not have more than a cup of cooked starch free vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and green peas. In case of vegetables being eaten raw, the quantity should not exceed 2 cups. Almonds, groundnuts and cashew nuts also make good diabetic snacks as they are rich in proteins and can help reduce cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Fruits like apples, grapes and bananas have very high fiber content, are low in fats and hence help in maintaining the glucose levels in the blood. While choosing diabetic snacks, you should aim at selecting snacks which are low in fats and carbohydrates but high in fiber and proteins. Some of the best diabetic snacks would include low fat dairy products, cereals, salads, vegetables, nuts and fruits which can be eaten in appropriate quantities to maintain good health. There are also numerous diabetic snacks ideas available for kids nowadays. Some of the diabetic snacks for kids include peanut butter and whole grain toast, snack bars, oatmeal porridges, raisins and frozen fruits. In general a good diet and regular exercise is a must for diabetes patients.
