Tonsillitis Diet Treatment The term tonsillitis is used to describe an infection in the tonsils, the two small almond-shaped organs located at the back of the throat. This condition is a lot more common in children than it is in adults. When affected by tonsillitis, most people suffer from throat pain, irritation, swallowing difficulty, fever, body ache and general weakness. In some severe cases, pus may also be visible in the tonsils. Earlier on, most people had to undergo a surgery to remove their tonsils when they were affected by tonsillitis.
However, nowadays, surgery is only regarded as the last option, in case medication and the tonsillitis diet treatment prove to be ineffective.
A tonsils diet can vary from person to person, depending on factors, like the severity of the condition, as well as the patient’s age and overall medical condition. In most cases, patients are asked to fast for a day or two, when following a diet for tonsillitis cure.
This allows the serious symptoms of the condition to subside. Hence, for the first day or two, the patient undergoing the tonsillitis diet treatment is allowed to have nothing but water and orange juice. Once the painful symptoms of tonsillitis subside, the patient will probably be asked to follow a fruit diet for a period of 3 or 4 days.
In case of children and some adults too, doctors advice the consumption of ice cream, which will soothe the throat and alleviate the painful symptoms. However, it is important to ensure that ice cream is not the only item people eat while following a tonsils diet. Fruits and fresh fruit juice should also be consumed at regular intervals during the day.
There are several different brands of tonsillitis dietary supplements easily available in the supermarkets as well as through online websites. However, before taking any dietary supplement, it is important to consult a doctor.
Tonsillitis Foods Decades ago, the only tonsillitis foods people ate while treating the condition were ice cream and oranges. However, in the present times, after a 2 day juice fast, people advised to consume fruits for tonsillitis too. In fact, following a fruit fast, for around 3 days can be very beneficial. During this phase, patients should consume the most highly recommended fruits for tonsillitis, which include melons, pineapples, oranges, grapes, peaches, pears, grapefruit and apples. For younger patients, these fruits can also be steamed. Fresh pineapple juice and orange juice are known to be very effective in the treatment of tonsillitis. After the fruits diet is complete, the most suitable tonsillitis foods to eat should be soft, creamy and easy to swallow. Hence, patients can be given pasta, mashed potato, scrambled eggs and steamed vegetables, as advised by a doctor.
While there are some foods that are good for patients undergoing tonsillitis treatment, there are others that can aggravate the symptoms of the condition, as they worsen the inflammation. Hence, such food items should be strictly avoided for at least a few weeks, till the patient has recovered completely. Given below is a list of some of the tonsillitis food to avoid:
- Crisp food items like hard bread, crackers, biscuits, croutons, chips and cookies. This is because crisp and crunchy foods scratch the throat leading to severe irritation.
- Spices and chilies as they could cause a burning sensation in the throat and could cause the inflammation to worsen
- Aerated beverages, such as colas or other sodas. Canned juice should also be avoided, as they contain sugar, which could further aggravate the inflammation in the tonsils.
There are many people who suffer from tonsillitis and food poisoning at the same time and therefore, need to follow a more restrictive diet. In such instances, it is absolutely essential to seek assistance form a health care provider.
Tonsillitis Treatment There are many doctors who administer tonsillitis treatment with antibiotics, in case the infection is the result of a bacterial invasion. Usually doctors advise patients to take penicillin orally, for around 10 days, to clear up the infection and inflammation. For people who are allergic to penicillin, other antibiotics will be recommended as a part of the tonsils treatment plan. Antibiotics could be a part of tonsillitis treatment for adults as well as children. However, because of the side effects generally associated with antibiotics, most parents prefer to go in for alternative forms of tonsillitis treatment in kids, especially toddlers.
Tonsillitis treatment in toddlers usually comprises of simple home remedies; hence, it can be described as a natural cure for tonsillitis. Some of the recommendations on how to cure tonsillitis in toddlers include:
- Allowing the child to get adequate amounts of sleep and rest, during the day.
- Providing an adequate intake of fluids, especially those that will have a soothing effect on the child, like broth, soup and warm water. Dehydration leads to a dry throat, which can cause worsen the symptoms and the treatment of tonsillitis gets adversely effected. Therefore, the child should drink a lot of water during the day.
- Adding a humidifier to the air can help in relieving throat irritation, which is very common in tonsillitis. Alternately, parents can sit with their children in a steamy bathroom for around 10 to 15 minutes.
The natural treatment of tonsillitis in children can be a bit more varied, as older children can take a few more remedies, as compared to babies and toddlers. The tonsillitis natural treatment for older children and adults too can include:
- Drinking boiled milk, to which a pinch of pepper and turmeric have been added. For best results, this concoction should be consumed for three nights in a row
- Squeezing the juice of a lime into a glass of lukewarm water and adding ¼ teaspoon of salt to it, along with 1 or 2 tablespoons of honey. Patients should sip this slowly
- A combination of vegetable juice, which includes 100 ml cucumber juice, 100 ml of beet juice and 300 ml of carrot juice is very effective. Consuming each of these juices individually can also be equally helpful.
- Gargling with a solution made using fenugreek seeds simmered in a liter of water for about half an hour.
- Applying a cold pack to the throat every two or three hours, through the day.
It is important to follow the tonsillitis treatment guidelines as specified by a doctor. In most instances, the tonsillitis treatment duration lasts for around 7 to 10 days. In case of women who suffer from this infection when they are pregnant, it is important to seek immediate medical help for the treatment of tonsillitis in pregnancy.
