Gastric ulcer increase acid production in the stomach lining:

I am diagnosed gastritis ulcer I want to know what to eat and what not to eat please advice me on this.

Gastric ulcer is an ulcer in the stomach lining which can be due to a variety of reasons.

A proper diet when followed along with some lifestyle changes and medications can help you to overcome your gastric ulcer symptoms. When it comes to ulcers, there is no one particular food that need to be avoided because you may feel that your symptoms worsen after eating a particular food but the same food may have no effect on other person with ulcer.

So you need to notice which food act as offenders for you, which increase your acid production, or heart burn. After you identify those foods, restrict them in your diet for some time till your symptoms for ulcer subside.

There are some diet tips listed below which also include the foods to avoid and include in your diet -

  1. Never starve yourself. When you feel hungry make sure to include small meals at regular intervals (5-6 meals a day). This is because large meals (especially loaded with fat) stimulates excessive acid secretion and can worsen your symptoms. However avoid eating too many meals a day (8-9 meals) as this can also increase the acid production and make symptoms worse.
  2. Three common offenders that should be avoided are alcohol, caffeine and fatty foods as they tend to produce excessive acid in the stomach which is beyond the mucous lining to withstand.
  3. Include linoleic acid in the diet in the form of unprocessed grains like maize as it has a healing and preventive property against gastric ulcers.

  4. Like other calcium carbonate containing antacids milk also has a soothing effect in the digestive tract when consumed. But this effect is symptomatic and may help suppress the symptoms only for a while; because the casein and fats in milk tend to stimulate the acid production in excessive amounts which can cause trouble.
  5. An ulcer in the stomach or the intestine can make the internal lining very delicate thus increase the soluble fiber gradually in your diet preferably in cooked form and avoid consumption of raw vegetables and fruits with skin.
  6. Also prevent consumption of spicy foods, chilies, pepper, green peppers, bell peppers, and red peppers as these are common triggers which can worsen your symptoms.
  7. Be active, along with these dietary modifications take your medications regularly and perform any mild form of exercise for quick recovery. Consult a specialist or a registered dietician before making any major changes in your diet.
