Hence, the treatment of conjunctivitis through salves and ointments alone may not cure the disease but a thorough cleansing of the system and adoption of an apt diet and healthy lifestyle can help reduce the probability of contracting conjunctivitis. Diet for ConjunctivitisHere is a sequence to initiate a diet plan to cleanse the system of all impurities and build a sound mind and body to prevent the onslaught of any ailment, including conjunctivitis: Fresh Fruit diet: An exclusive fresh fruit diet is considered to be one of the best ways to start a diet. It is suggested to adopt an exclusive fresh fruit diet for about seven days. The diet may consist of fresh juicy fruits in season such as apples, oranges, pears, grapes, pineapples and grapefruits
It is advisable to avoid intake of bananas. Do not include any other food items during the fruit diet. Alternative Fresh Fruit Juice Diet: A juice fast is advisable for people with a serious problem for three or four days. The procedure is to take the juice of an orange, in a glass of warm water, if desired, every two hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m
nothing else should be taken, as otherwise, the value of the fast will be lost. If orange juice is not preferred one can substitute with carrot juice .A warm water enema should be taken daily during the period of fasting. The short juice fast may be followed by an all-fruit diet for the next seven days. Well-balanced Meal: After the all fruit diet and juice fast one can progress to a well-balanced meal. Here is the list of the foods that you must include during your meals: 1) Breakfast: To comprise of fresh fruits in season but avoid bananas.
2) Lunch: Includes large mixed raw vegetable salad with whole meal bread or wheat tortilla and butter.
3) Dinner: May comprise of two or three steamed vegetables with nuts and fresh fruits Avoid Potatoes
Continue with the fresh fruit diet followed by a well balanced meal regime and this process must be ideally repeated after three months of the initiating the treatment and follow it up three months later, if necessary. It is advisable to cleanse bowels daily with a warm water enema during the fast, and later as required.
Other Nutritive Supplements: Raw juices of certain vegetables, especially carrots and spinach, have been found valuable in the treatment of conjunctivitis. The combined juices of these two vegetables have proved very effective. Six ounces of spinach juice mixed with ten ounces of carrot in this combination could prove to be an effective remedy. Vitamin A and B2 have also been found valuable in the treatment of conjunctivitis It is advisable to take adequate quantities of natural foods rich in these two vitamins. The valuable sources of vitamin A are whole milk, yoghurt, butter, carrots, pumpkins, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, mangoes and papayas. Foods rich in vitamin B2 include green leafy vegetables, milk, almonds, citrus fruits, bananas and tomatoes.
Avoid: It is advisable to avoid an excessive intake of starchy and sugary foods in the form of white bread, refined cereals, potatoes, puddings, pies, pastry, sugar, jams and confectionery, which cause the general catarrhal condition such as conjunctivitis. One should also avoid the in-take of excessive quantities of meat and other protein fatty foods, strong tea and coffee, too much salt, condiments and sauces
Other Remedial Measures: 1) The eye muscle exercise for relaxing and strengthening the eyes will be beneficial in the treatment of conjunctivitis
2) With regard to local treatment to the eyes a cold foment renders almost immediate relief by chasing away an overactive local blood supply. Here is how to do it: Fold a small hand towel. Saturate it with cold water. Squeeze out excess water and mould toweling gently over both eyes. Repeat the process as soon as the foment gets warned.
3) A daily exercise routine, including breathing exercises and fresh air will be most beneficial. The eyes should be looked after carefully and excessive reading or close work under artificial light must be avoided.
