A bunion is an abnormal growth that develops at the joint located at the base of the big toe - also referred to as the MTP joint.



This growth takes place when the tissue or the bone gets displaced. A large bony protuberance is created, as the toe bends inwards at an abnormal angle.

In the case of women, bunions are typically formed due to tight fitting shoes which constrict the toes; the formation of bunions is characterized by a swelling and pain around the affected area.

Sneakers are useful in such a manner that they relieve the stress on the bunion, in turn leading to a reduction in pain as well. Placing an ice pack over the affected area is believed to be an effective remedy, especially when the feet have been enclosed in a tight pair of shoes all day or if the patient has been on his/her feet throughout the day. It is strongly recommended to seek a doctor’s diagnosis about the specific case of bunions as treatment may differ from person to person. The doctor can also recommend if surgery is required.

Some medical experts believe that a bunion diet comprises fruits such as kiwis and red currants that can help in reducing the occurrence of bunions as these fruits have a high content of antioxidants and vitamin C, believed to be effective in relieving inflammation. When consuming these fruits ensure that the white layer beneath the skin is also consumed, as it is rich in bioflavonoids which complements the healing capacity of the vitamin C.

Doctors are also likely to advise patients to follow a diet that has a high content of steamed and raw green vegetables. Whilst this diet cannot mend a bunion, it can go a long way in relieving the symptoms.



Do stay away from foods that are fried, greasy or fatty, particularly those with saturated fat or hydrogenated oils as such foods tend to aggravate the symptoms. A tablespoon of flaxseed oil daily is also believed to be beneficial as it contains essential fatty acids useful in healing and reducing the inflammation.
