Diet for Jaundice and Jaundice NutritionCan you please tell me what type of foods should be avoided in jaundice? What is best to eat? Jaundice is a symptom of different conditions but most of the time it indicates a compromised liver.
It is caused due to high levels of Bilirubin in the blood which gives the skin and sclera or white of the eyes a yellowish appearance. Bilirubin is a catabolic by-product which is derived from the breakdown of red blood cells.
The liver excretes this pigment in bile which is stored in the gall bladder and is essential for digestion. Some signs of jaundice include loss of appetite, fever, dark urine, itching, clay-colored stools, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
To treat the jaundice fast, adequate rest is essential. Certain dietary modifications listed below when followed along with medical treatment will help in treating the jaundice –
- For the first few days when your Bilirubin levels are high and you experience other symptoms it is best to take bed rest. Also avoid eating solid foods for first 2-3 days. Fluids and clear liquids should be emphasized. This will help to compensate for the water and electrolyte losses caused in vomiting and also help to excrete excess Bilirubin from the body. Besides boiled water you can include fresh fruit juice like orange juice, lemon juice, apple juice, pineapple juice, carrot juice, beetroot juice, and other fruit and vegetable juices of your choice.
You can also include coconut water as the simple sugars from these fluids will help in the regeneration of the liver cells and put little load on the liver for digestion. - As the symptoms subside and the Bilirubin levels go down soft easily digestible foods can be included in the diet for energy and proteins. To increase the appetite and decrease nausea and vomiting prefer eating small meals at regular intervals.
- Preferably have a bland diet with much less spices and low fat. Avoid fatty fried foods, junk foods, meats, organ meats, pork, shelled fish, ham and poultry with skin till you recover completely.
- To make your diet palatable fats from dairy products like milk, low fat cheese, cottage cheese and eggs can be added to your diet in small amounts. As your symptoms subside gradually simple fats that can be easily digested like butter and clarified butter can be included in the diet.
- Jaundice may take several weeks to subside so make sure to take adequate rest and eat a well balanced healthy diet for quick recovery.
