How to Treat Jaundice with Jaundice Diet?

I am suffering from Jaundice.

The bile content in my blood is 4.9. Can I include fish and eggs in my diet?

Jaundice is a symptom for many disorders where the skin and sclera of the eyes get a yellow discoloration. This is caused due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood.

Bilirubin is synthesized in the liver from degenerative processes of red blood cells, the liver then secretes the bilirubin in the form of bile. Bile enters the gall bladder and is used when needed for fat digestion in the intestine. Jaundice is a condition which at most times indicates a malfunction of the liver to handle excess bilirubin.

Common symptoms of jaundice like loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting often makes food intake difficult. Rest as much as you can and follow these dietary guidelines –

  • For first few days when your bilirubin levels are high try to include as much fluids as you can as this will encourage elimination of bilirubin in the urine and stools. Fluids can be in the form of boiled water and clear fluids like coconut water, sugar cane juice, fresh fruit and vegetable juices. The juices will also help to maintain proper electrolyte balance besides keeping you hydrated if you experience vomiting.
  • As the symptoms subside, you can start with soft easily digestible foods like cereal porridges, gruels, rice with yoghurt, or fruit custards. You can include eggs at this stage but remember to cook them properly. Also avoid deep fried eggs or adding hydrogenated oils and fats while preparing eggs.
  • If you feel nauseous then try to include small meals but at regular intervals. A high calorie and moderate protein diet is preferred for quick recovery. As your bilirubin levels drop further you can include fish in your diet. However remember that even though you need calories, restrict your calories from fats as far as possible.

Cooking method of fish is important; prefer boiled or steamed fish instead of frying the fish in more amount of oil. Avoid fatty cuts of meat, organ meats, shellfish, pork, poultry with skin and ham till you recover completely. These foods are high in fat and cholesterol which are difficult to digest.
  • Gradually as your bilirubin levels decrease you can add simple easily digestible fats like cream and butter in your diet.
  • Avoid some foods like semi cooked pulses, raw vegetables or fermented foods till your bilirubin levels decrease as these foods can put extra load on the compromised liver.
