Lap Band Surgery Diet |
Healing Diet For Post Lap Band SurgeryLap band surgery is a procedure used for severely obese people that is based on the theory of reducing calorie intake for long-term weight loss. A surgeon places an adjustable silicone band near the top part of the stomach. This creates a pouch that acts almost like a “mini stomach”. This pouch can hold only around 5-7 ounces of food, which is then slowly passed on to the main stomach. However, filling up the pouch produces a feeling of fullness and the patient stops feeling hungry.
This method of limiting calories can result in significant weight loss over time.
Tips For Patients Undergoing Lap Band SurgeryHowever, patients who undergo lap band surgery need to be very careful about their diet. This is because they have to make sure that each mini-meal has the correct nutritional value to avoid missing out on essential vitamins, mineral, proteins, and enzymes.
In general, foods are selected that have a high nutritional value in the smallest portions.
For this reason, patients have to stay away from bulky meats such as steak, hamburgers, and pork chops. All fruits need to be carefully peeled and de-seeded before consuming them.
Vegetables should also be peeled and pureed before eating them. Care needs to be taken to avoid vegetables that are high in fiber. Almost all oily, spicy, or fried foods are left out of the diet, since their nutritional value is usually low.
Protein is usually provided in the form of protein shakes for maximum nutrition and ease of digestion. Also, the newly created “mini stomach” is quite sensitive and has to get used to new foods in a phased manner. Immediately after the surgery, patients are kept on a liquid diet for the first 4-5 days. This helps the newly inserted gastric band to settle in and allows the patient to get used to the new feeling. For the next two months, the texture of food is slowly moved towards solid. In the beginning, almost all foods are blended or pureed. Soups and baby food may also be recommended.
Caffeine is eliminated from the diet for at least 3 months, while carbonated drinks are to be avoided due to complications such as excessive gas and bloating. When it comes to solid foods, the patient needs to eat small bites and chew thoroughly to reduce food mass and allow saliva to begin the digestive process. However, some patients experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting when moved to solid foods. In these cases, it may be necessary to switch back to liquids until the new stomach is ready for solids. This surgery is only recommended if the doctor believes that normal methods of weight loss are not possible. |
