Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder, which is characterized by eating binges or bouts of uncontrolled eating, which are followed by compensatory behaviors like purging (self-induced puking), fasting, exercising excessively, misusing laxatives or enemas or medicines that increase urine production. Bulimia can actually be termed as a psychological disorder which is a more serious problem than excessive dieting. The effects of bulimia nervosa are potentially life threatening.

The exact causes of Bulimia are hard to determine, as there are several factors that could lead to the development of an eating disorder. These factors could be genetic or could include psychological disorders, family influences, trauma, and social influence.

In the modern world, almost everyone in obsessed by being thin, rather than healthy and this could be one of the biggest contributors to this problem. However, like other eating disorders, bulimia is difficult to treat and cannot be done alone. Apart from medical experts, a bulimic patient will need a lot of help and support from family and even friends.

Bulimic people often complain about their weight and eat an unusually large portion of food in one go, especially the unhealthy kind. They also avoid eating in public or in front of other people. You may also find them working out obsessively, to compensate for what they have eaten.
