Anaemia Treatments and Diet for Different Types of Anaemia

What meals can be taken by anaemic patient? Can you please provide a list of foods for anaemia?

An anemia diet that is caused due to iron deficiency usually consists of iron rich foods and iron supplements.

However before starting any diet for anemia it is important to know the cause for anemia. Anemia can be of different types each with its different causes.

Some of the common types of anemia include iron deficiency anemia, anemia due to chronic diseases, vitamin deficiency anemia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, anemia associated with bone marrow diseases or other blood conditions. Many types of these anaemias can not be prevented; however vitamin deficiency anemia and iron deficiency anemia (common types of anemia) can be prevented by following a specific diet and medications.
  • Include food sources rich in iron – some of these include meats, organ meats like liver, kidney, fish, sea food, iron fortified breads and cereals, rice flakes, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, amaranth, broccoli, whole grains, blackstrap molasses, nuts, beans especially lima beans, dry fruits like dates, apricots, raisins and prunes.
  • If you prefer non-vegetarian foods then it would be best.

This is because the heam iron present in non vegetarian sources is readily absorbed by the body compared to the non-heam iron present in vegetarian food sources.
  • For better iron absorption preferably eat iron rich sources. For example if you have an iron fortified cereal for your breakfast, make sure to drink a glass of fresh orange juice or fresh lime juice. Vitamin C in any form will help better absorption of iron in your body. Some of the other iron absorption enhancers include strawberries, cantaloupe, grape fruit, Brussels sprouts, tomato, tomato juice, green peppers, red peppers and potatoes.
  • After eating iron rich foods avoid foods that are good sources of tannins. For example never drink a tea or coffee immediately after your meal. Many people have a habit of drinking tea or coffee after meals.

The tannins present in tea and coffee will inhibit the iron absorption in your body. Some other iron inhibitors include red wine, chard, soy products, whole grains and bran, sweet potatoes and beet greens.
  • Also if you are on multivitamin supplements along with iron supplements then talk to your specialist. Iron when taken along with calcium supplements may hinder the absorption of either nutrient.
Never start or stop any medications, herbs or supplements for increasing iron without consulting your specialist. Also know what type of anemia you are suffering from. This will help you get the correct treatment in terms of diet and medications.
