Interesting Facts About Glaucoma Eye Disease And Diet For Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve loses the retinal ganglion cells in some specific pattern of optic neuropathy due to the non-functionality of the eye’s drainage system. An increased intraocular pressure is the key factor in causing glaucoma. Some people have a naturally high pressure and they live their lives without any damage, while others having even less pressure can develop this disease. If not treated in due time, glaucoma can lead to total blindness due to the permanent damage of the optic nerve.

Glaucoma Types And Treatment Of Glaucoma

There are four types of glaucoma:

Open angle or chronic Glaucoma. Open angle or chronic glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma and progresses slowly so the patient remains unaware until significant signs appear.

In this type of glaucoma, the anterior eye structure looks normal, but the aqueous fluid inside it is raising the intraocular pressure. If not treated soon, it results in permanent loss of eye sight as the optic nerve and retina are damaged.

Closed angle or acute glaucoma.

The closed angle glaucoma or acute glaucoma does not show early symptoms and manifests itself suddenly. It should be diagnosed as soon as possible as vision is lost very rapidly. This type of glaucoma is recognized only when it has progressed a lot.

The vision lost due to glaucoma has no recovery chances. It is of the second highest cause of blindness. Glaucoma can happen to both men and women.

The patients of closed angle glaucoma experience severe eye pain in combination with effects such as nausea, blurred vision, rainbows around lights, and a red eye. This type of glaucoma should be treated immediately.

Secondary Glaucoma: This type of glaucoma results due to another disease or a problem with the eye including inflammation, trauma, previous surgery, diabetes, tumor, and certain medications.
