Facts About Atherosclerosis |
Definition Of Atherosclerosis And Atherosclerosis TreatmentsWhat is Atherosclerosis? Atherosclerosis is a disease in which plaque builds up on the inner walls of the arteries, reducing the flow of blood through them. Plaque is a raised patch in the inner lining of the blood vessels. It may consist of low-density lipoprotein, fibrous tissue, decaying muscular cells, blood platelet clumps, cholesterol, or even calcium. Plaque is most common in people with high cholesterol level in the blood.
The density of plaque increases with age. This prevents the vessels from performing their function smoothly.
It also encourages the formation of blood clots (thrombi). At times, portion of these clots break away and flow in the blood line to block other smaller arteries.
Though it can happen in any part of the human body, atherosclerosis is most critical when it takes place in the heart, brain, or in the arteries which carry blood to the brain. Atherosclerosis is responsible for more deaths in America than any other disease.
Atherosclerosis which impacts the heart is also known as coronary heart disease. It is the most common cause of death, and accounts for one-third of all deaths. Atherosclerosis can also severely impact the functioning of other organs such as kidneys.
There are many factors which are responsible for atherosclerosis:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Cholesterol
- Obesity
- Family history
- Passive lifestyle
Atherosclerosis does not display any symptoms until the damage has been done to the arteries.
Restriction of oxygen-rich blood to the heart may give you a heart attack. If the blood flow to the legs is restricted, it usually gives an intermittent pain in the legs, especially when the leg muscles are exhausted. If the arteries supplying blood to the brain get affected, you may suffer from transient ischemic attack, dizziness, or even a brain stroke.
Diet For Atherosclerosis Disease- A well-balanced diet can be very effective in controlling your bodily problems.
An effective dietary program for atherosclerosis should include the following: - Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, garlic, onion, citrus fruit and peppers. These are very beneficial for the heart owing to their antioxidant properties.
- Eat oily fish such as herring and salmon. These improve the cholesterol levels, and make your arteries more elastic.
- Lower the cholesterol level of the body by consuming foods which are rich in fiber such as oats, beans and apples.
- Do not consume red meat as it is high in saturated fats, which are harmful for the arteries.
- When purchase products such as oil, go for ones that are low in saturated, hydrogenated or trans-fats; and low in sodium.
- Reduce the intake of alcohol.
- Quit or reduce smoking.
