Childbirth is usually diagnosed to occur about 38 to 40 weeks after fertilization or conception. So the total pregnancy period is almost nine months.
Foods And Healthy Diet For PregnancyPregnancy requires a woman to eat more than normal as she is to provide full nourishment to the new born.
Here are some foods that should be included in the diet during and after pregnancy.
- Foods that are rich in fats, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins, and calcium should be taken regularly during pregnancy.
- Milk or milk products including cheese, yogurt, and ice cream should be consumed regularly.
- Fresh fruits and green vegetables should be added to the daily diet.Eggs should be eaten as they contain fats and proteins.
- Red meat should be consumed as it helps in the generation of red blood cells.
- Folate or folic acid is needed to decrease the risk of baby Neural Tube Defects (NTD). It can be used in the form of supplements as it helps in increasing maternal blood volume.
- Vegetables such as lettuce leaves, cabbage, turnip greens, mustard, and collard are very useful for the nourishment of the new born before birth. The daily diet should be complemented with wheat bread, cornmeal, cornbread,
- or tortillas.
- Juices of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and limes should be added for the mother’s health.
- Iron is necessary for the development and growth of the fetus and placenta.
- Iron is abundantly found in fish, poultry, dried fruits, whole-grain breads, and iron-fortified cereals.
- Dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D so these should also be included during a pregnancy as they are necessary for the development of bones.
- Foods to be avoided. Certain foods, as listed below, should be avoided during pregnancy as they may prove to be harmful.
- Spicy foods should be avoided as they may cause heart burn.
- Soda drinks and alcohol is strictly prohibited for pregnant women.
- Artificial sweeteners can be used in limited quantities.
- Coffee or tea should not be consumed in excess as they contain caffeine.
- Raw sea foods like oysters should be avoided during pregnancy.
