Cholesterol Diet Food to decrease LDL

Cholesterol is synthesized in the liver. It is an ideal part of every cell and is analogous to wax. It performs an array of functions thereby helping the body in majority of its functions. About thirty per cent of the daily calories should be contributed by fat. Dietary fat is segregated into two broad categories namely, unsaturated and saturated fat.


Fat provides energy, though increased intake contributes to an increase in cholesterol levels. Thereby there is a high risk of heart diseases, atherosclerosis and stroke in high cholesterol diet .

A number of researches prove the decrease in the LDL cholesterol levels by ten to twenty per cent by modifying the diet.


Also, a high cholesterol diet plan ensures a reduction in the blood cholesterol levels by the second or third week of consumption The general guidelines for a heart friendly diet are as follows:

  • Avoid foods that are rich in Trans fats and saturated fats
  • Good and healthy fats that are recommended are fish oil and vegetable oil. Fish oil provides the beneficial omega 3 fatty acids
  • Fresh fruits and raw vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide the necessary phytonutrients and antioxidants.

  • Whole eggs are replaced by egg substitute
  • Oat meal or oat bran is one of the best cereals to start off your day
  • Cream sauce and white sauces are better avoided, as they are loaded with butter
  • Spices such as thyme, basil, oregano, cinnamon, cumin, parsley and cilantro are helpful in enrichment of flavor and taste of foods
  • Butter, margarine, clarified butter and other saturated fats are replaced by olive or canola oil. This is due to the fact that saturated fats are the culprits behind the major increase in blood cholesterol levels
  • Use nonstick cookware to reduce the usage of oil.

  • Whole milk and related dairy products are replaced by skimmed milk and low fat milk products

Animal foods, such as chicken are deskinned prior to consumption. Red meat is avoided, as it has layered fat in between. Lean meat is a good replacement. Cooking methods such as boiling, grilling, baking, pressure cooking and microwave are helpful. Deep fat frying is avoided. A number of medications are available commercially for lowering the cholesterol levels. They function to the maximum level in addition to a good diet. They are not substitutes for a reduced fat diet, though they work in conjunction with the same.
