Cholesterol is synthesized in the liver.

It is an ideal part of every cell and is analogous to wax. It performs an array of functions thereby helping the body in majority of its functions. About thirty per cent of the daily calories should be contributed by fat. Dietary fat is segregated into two broad categories namely, unsaturated and saturated fat.

Fat provides energy, though increased intake contributes to an increase in cholesterol levels. Thereby there is a high risk of heart diseases, atherosclerosis and stroke.

A number of researches prove the decrease in the LDL cholesterol levels by ten to twenty per cent by modifying the diet. The general guidelines for a heart friendly diet are as follows:

  • Whole eggs are replaced by egg substitute
  • Oat meal or oat bran is one of the best cereals to start off your day
  • Cream sauce and white sauces are better avoided, as they are loaded with butter
  • Spices such as thyme, basil, oregano, cinnamon, cumin, parsley and cilantro are helpful in enrichment of flavor and taste of foods
  • Butter, margarine, clarified butter and other saturated fats are replaced by olive or canola oil. This is due to the fact that saturated fats are the culprits behind the major increase in blood cholesterol levels

  • Whole milk and related dairy products are replaced by skimmed milk and low fat milk products
  • Foods rich in complex carbohydrates are helpful. Some of these foods are cereals, whole grains, fruits and vegetables
Cocoa butter, coconut oil and palm oil are vegetables fats that are abstained from the diet.
Animal foods, such as chicken are deskinned prior to consumption. Red meat is avoided, as it has layered fat in between. Lean meat is a good replacement. Cooking methods such as boiling, grilling, baking, pressure cooking and microwave are helpful. Deep fat frying is avoided.

A number of medications are available commercially for lowering the cholesterol levels. They function to the maximum level in addition to a good diet. They are not substitutes for a reduced fat diet, though they work in conjunction with the same.
