Low Carbohydrate Foods

Carbohydrates are broadly classified into complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are considered to be as good carbohydrates as they provide the body with high energy levels and take a longer time to digest. The sugar released by the metabolism of complex carbohydrates is instantly available for the various bodily functions. Additionally complex carbohydrates on account of their slow digestion make the individual feel full for longer periods of time thereby preventing them from over eating. On the other hand simple carbohydrates are those that are quickly and easily digested and absorbed by the body.

They should be consumed in lesser amounts as many foods like cake, pastries, and candies have high amounts of sugars that simply provide the body with empty calories and also result in one being over weight if consumed in excess.

A low carbohydrate diet works on the principle that each person should be able to find the ideal level of carbohydrates that is suitable for their body type and lifestyle. Some people have also found that monitoring the blood glucose levels is helpful in trying to figure out what foods and eating patterns tend to influence their blood sugar levels. This method can also be effective in selecting the quantity of low carbohydrate foods. Low carbohydrate fruits and vegetables usually should form the base of the food pyramid of those on a low carbohydrate diet. It is advisable to have at least three to five cups of non starchy vegetables per day. Low carb foods which form part of the low carbohydrates diet will also include seeds and nuts and they can act as a substitute for the starchier food. Nut flour may also be used to bake certain products instead of refined flour such as muffins. Similarly low carbohydrate recipes which include flax seeds should also be incorporated into a low carbohydrate foods diet as they are extremely healthy. A combination of healthy fat, fiber and proteins in nuts and seeds allows them to be satisfying and they also offer most of the nutrients that are present in the starchy grains such as wheat. Low carb fast foods should also include beans and legumes as though they are rich in carbohydrates, these type of carbs are generally digested a lot slowly or not digested at all in the small intestine and hence is an excellent option for those people who are not able to process sugar well. Low carbohydrate foods diet ate those dietary programs that tend to restrict the intake of carbohydrates either for treating obesity or for weight control. In such diets foods like pasta and bread which are high in digestible carbohydrates are replaced by foods like soy products and meats which have a high fat and protein content.

Low carbohydrate diets also include low carb foods like green leafy vegetables. In a low carbohydrate diet the intake of carbohydrates in an individual is reduced to 20 to 60g per day and the consumption of fats and proteins in increased so as to compensate for a certain portion of calories that would earlier come from carbohydrates. Low carb foods will include those that are high in proteins and come from animal sources. However these do not include processed meats such as sausages and hot dogs. Ideal sources of low carb protein foods are poultry, beef, eggs, seafood, and lamb. Similarly most of the full fat dairy products are also considered as low carb foods however they should be consumed in moderation and the intake should not increase more than one or two ounces daily. The dairy foods include butter, cream cheese, and heavy cream.
