Low Carb Meal

Low carb diets are those that call for a reduced intake of digestible carbohydrates.



Fats and proteins replace the carbohydrate in the diet. They are also referred to as low carbohydrate diets. Weight loss associated with low carb diet meal is temporary.



The excessive water retained in the body is lost, along with the muscle mass. The initial days of the diet also witnesses fatigue and weakness. This is attributed to the sudden change in the carbohydrate intake.



Low carbohydrate meals are followed as treatment procedures, in the case of diabetes, epilepsy and obesity. They are ketogenic diets, which results in the production of ketone bodies, as a result of restriction of carbohydrates.
A low carb diet meal promises reduced increase in blood sugar levels. Read the labels properly before consumption. Sugar alcohols, such as maltitol are completely removed from the diet. A number of mineral and vitamin supplements are recommended during low carb meals. This is due to the fact that, during the shift or transition, the system calls for more nutrients to adjust the shock of changing to a low carbohydrate meal.

Complete abstinence from vegetables, result in deficiency of nutrients. Reduced intake of complex carbohydrates also result in constipation and other problems. Some of the commonly preferred low carb snacks are tuna salad and celery, cheese sticks, deviled eggs, cheddar cheese and dill pickle, cottage cheese and berries, nuts and cottage cheese, peanut butter and celery, lunch meat with cheese or vegetables, spinach dip with raw vegetables, flaxseed crackers, cheese spread in mushrooms and pepperoni chips with cheese dips are a few of them.

Low carb meals proves beneficial in

  • decreasing blood pressure and blood glucose
  • improving sensitivity to insulin
  • weight loss
  • increasing the HDL cholesterol levels

Certain research also reveals improvement in oral hygiene, improved psychological reactions, increased energy levels, enhancement in mental functioning and reduced cravings for sweets.





Though a number of benefits exist, certain demerits, such as

  • headaches
  • increased cholesterol levels
  • digestive problems (due to increased protein in the diet)
  • loss of muscle mass
  • hypertension and
  • general weakness and fatigue also result

Loss and gain of weight in the yo-yo method, is seen to accompany low carb diets. Low carbohydrate meals are opted for due to the rapid and speedy weight loss. The option of protein foods also help in making the meals appetizing. But, care is essential, as muscle mass loss is not recommended.
