High Fiber Cereals With High Amount Of Calories For Better Health

Cereals can be consumed in many forms.

The amount of calories they contain depends upon the type of processing, additional nutrients or taste enhancers which are added, and also upon the particular grain. Rice, wheat, oats, maize, barley and rye are all cereals, but each contains different levels of calories. The amount of calories you take in with cereals also depends upon the quantities consumed.

You could eat them in the form of ready-to-eat breakfast cereals.

These are in the form of flakes or grains and come either as plain or mixed/encrusted with nuts, fruits, chocolates, honey or other sweeteners. This increases the calorie content. Calories in breakfast are sometimes quite high due to the usage of refined sugars.

Breakfast Cereals For Healthy And Effective Breakfast

  • Breakfast cereals could be either made of rice, wheat, bran or oats, which again influence their calorific value.

Oats and bran are generally considered to contain lesser calories.
  • Cereals are also made into breads, rolls, croissants, muffins, cakes, crackers, etc. The calorie content depends upon whether it is whole-grain meal or refined white flour. The latter contains more calories than whole grain cereals. Breads and rolls made out of whole meal or wheat germ, would have lower levels of calories than those made from refined white flour.
  • Cakes, pastries, muffins and cream rolls would have a much higher calorie content than breads, because of the addition of refined sugars and fats.
  • It is difficult to measure exact calorie contents in cereals as it also varies due to the amounts consumed. Usually nutri-scales are use to accurately test and measure the calories in cereals. A normal bowl of cereal could be anything between 30 to 100 grams.
  • On a rough estimate, we could compare it like this. While bran would have about 265 calories, crunchy bran may have about 285. While plain cornflakes could be 353, nut cornflakes would shoot up to 382, and chocolate coated ones to 395. Rice and wheat flakes would be about 357.

  • Sometimes, whole grain cereals or breads made of whole meal may contain as many calories, depending upon additional factors, but they may still result in lower calorie intake. This is because they contain more fiber, which fills up our stomach faster, so that we eat less quantities of that food. And less food means that we consume less calories.
  • Cereals are sources of simple and complex carbohydrates. This means that they supply glucose to the body, which raises our energy levels. The calorie content in cereals is always high on this account.
  • Tip: If you are on a weight loss program, it would be wiser to check the food labels and go for breakfast cereals or breads and cakes which contain less sugar and fats.
