How to Bike & Burn Calories

Have you ever wondered how many calories are burned in biking more often, faster or farther? Or even better how the extra effort you are putting to burn energy by biking would translate to weight loss in pounds? Well, like any other activity the answer would largely depend on your body weight, body frame, duration of biking, kind of terrain and intensity at which you bike.

Calories burned per mile biking will vary according to your weight, speed and intensity at which you bike.

But in general the factor for the formula doesn’t change –

  1. Biking 6 miles/hour pace at the rate of 1.5 min/mile pace 1.5 x your weight in pounds x 1 hour
  2. Biking 10 miles/hour pace at the rate of 6.0 min/mile pace 2.0 x your weight in pounds x 1 hour
  3. Biking 15 miles/hour pace at the rate of 4.0 min/mile pace 3.9 x your weight in pounds x 1 hour

Note: For 15 minutes use 0.25 hours; for 30 minutes use 0.5 hours and for 45 minutes use 0.75 hours.

For example if you bike for 15 miles per hour and your weight is 130 pounds then your calories burnt in biking for 30 minutes will be 3.9 x 130 x 0.5 =  254 calories per 30 minutes

How Many Calories burned by Biking

In general for every 3500 calories burned by biking equals to one pound weight loss. For example if you weigh 130 pounds, and you add three hours of biking (moderate effort) in a week in your schedule without making any diet changes you should lose ½ pound in a week or about 2 pounds in a month.

However if you weigh 150 pounds then accordingly your weight loss will also increase (with same amount and duration of biking).

Bike riding is a type of exercise that is affected by wind resistance. So the faster you ride the more energy you will use and in turn the more calories you burn.

Again calories burnt by biking on a plain road or calories burnt mountain biking or calories burnt in biking on a slope shall vary largely.

Biking promotes calories to burn in a healthy manner, that is, it promotes weight loss even if there are no diet restrictions. Besides weight loss biking also promises other health benefits – it can help to lower or maintain your blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, maintain blood glucose levels, increase bone density, prevent cardiovascular diseases, increase flexibility, decrease depression by increasing endorphins and strengthens the nervous system and immune system. Biking will also help to increase hormone production which will counteract the effects of ageing.

Ensure some safety rules while biking on the roadside or on a mountain. Always wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are intended for biking. Preferably wear bright colored clothes and don’t forget to put on your helmet. Preferably use bike lanes that will separate you from other traffic areas and prevent any chances of accidents.

Along with biking and other exercises if you follow a well balanced diet then weight loss will be more effective and healthy.
